Ardleigh Parish Records.
« on: Saturday 31 January 15 15:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have ancestors Henry Garnham and his wife Hannah Finch who were of Ardleigh. Their last child was baptised there in 1761. I believe Hannah may have died, there was a burial for a Hannah Garnham 12/9/1764. I am wondering if Henry may have married again and wonder if anyone out there has access to the marriage records from 1764 for the Ardleigh Parish.

Sue

The hannah garnum burial has the same spelling as hannah garnum the mother of lucy baptised 12/4/1761 so I think you are probably right about her death.

That's ok. Where is he living in the 1871 census?

Hi,
The Essex Record Office catalogue (SEAX) shows that they hold a will for a Henry Garnham from Thorpe-le-Soken dated 1780 reference D/APsW 1/88; I don't know whether this is your chap or maybe a relative. If you want to have a copy of this will you could either subscribe to Essex Ancestors (www.essexancestors.co.uk) which would only be £5 for a day (and you would get to see the parish registers images as well) or you could contact the ERO about getting them to email you a copy - try emailing them at ero.searchroom@essex.gov.uk.
 :)

Before you get the will or subscription, the children were elizabeth, Charlotte, henry, homan, Daniel, zollat?, Jonathan and John. It does say that some of them aren't of age yet. If these aren't the names of Henry's children, you'll know its not your henry.

Hi,

Thanks for all your contributions.

Henry would have been born around the 1720 mark so wouldn't have made it to the census. He married Hannah in Cochesters St Mary the Virgin at the Walls in 1739. The marriage entry shows that they were of Ardleigh, Essex although I can find no baptism for either of them there. Their first child, Henry was baptised there in 1742, they had others at Hingham by Nayland before returning to Ardleigh where my ancestor, their daughter Lucy was baptised in 1761. I think it likely that Hannah then died in 1764 but I can't find what happened to Henry. I don't think he is the same man as the one from Thorpe le Soken. Lucy married in Ardleigh in 1782 and she and her husband moved on to Manningtree.

I have a lot of Garnhams on my tree for this area and Gosbeck, Suffolk. I feel sure they are all related somehow but can't find the thread!

Thanks everyone for the information.

Sue.
