Death of Andrew Stevenson, Fareham
« on: Saturday 31 January 15 16:31 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out if this death record could be my GG Grandfather Andrew Stevenson. He was born in Dublin and the date I have is approx 1838 , he later lived in Fareham with his son James and daughter Frances the first census they appear on  is the 1881 from which I have his birth date. I can’t find him after the 1881 Census but I have found a death record from 1887 but his age is not correct to what I have.

Andrew Stevenson death registered Sep qtr Fareham RD aged 66, ref 2b 345

This is the only death record for that name in Fareham and Hampshire and I don’t really want to waste £9 on a cert if its not right, any ideas where I can get more info on that record
Thanks, Westy

I was going to say is his wife a widow on the next census but am guessing she had already passed away if he was living with his children?

Have you found the children in 1891 without him - how old were they?

Yes he is down as a Widow in 1881 and have not found any trace of his wife in the UK but may have a marriage in Dublin but can't be sure, if its him his wife is Dorothy. On the 1891 his son James is 30 and a lodger and his daughter Frances (my great grandmother) is married to Robert Hayward and she is 28

Ages on death certs are only as good as the knowledge of whoever reported the death.  Ages on census returns were not always accurate either.

Buying the death cert may not completely solve your problem unless one of his children reported it. If they didn't - then you would have to hope that the address and occupation from 1881 match that on the death cert
