Rawlinson family - Mansegh, Middleton, Killington and local areas
« on: Sunday 01 February 15 15:19 GMT (UK) »
I am struggling to find parentage/ family of Ann Rawlinson who married Joseph Shepherd ( both shown of Mansegh) in 1700s. I can take their children onwards into Whittington Lancs but would be grateful for any info of the families before this date.  Many thanks for any idea and hints

Hello, From details of marriage I have found using ancestry records, Ann was 26 at her marriage in 1751, so probable birth 1725. She and her husband Joseph Shepherd are described 'of Mansergh' Her last child was born 1764.  I have not found her death but husband Joseph Shepherd re-married in 1778.  I think most of her children were born in Middleton.
Joseph's lineage is also unclear - after this first marriage he seems to have lived in Middleton and then after second marriage is in Docker, Lancs where he died in 1817
Many thanks for any help

Variation of surnames would have been helpful. The item you found is not a marriage but a bond and it would appear the marriage would be in their home parish of Kirkby Lonsdale.Missing IGI batches are here..http://www.archersoftware.co.uk/igi/fs-wes.htm#K

Their marriage entry appears within the St Mary, Kirkby Lonsdale register on the 23 Aug 1751. They were recorded as Joseph Shiphard & Anne Rawlinson both of Mansergh. Their marriage-bond, of the same date, adds that Joseph was a husbandman and Anne a spinster. Joseph made his mark on the bond, while their bondsman - John ATKINSON of Mansergh, Yeoman, signed. Their ages (on the bond) were recorded as 23+ for Joseph and 26 for Anne. However, note that ages on bonds are extremely unreliable and often under-stated (more so as the difference between their real-age and 21 increases).

Their marriage entry is the first reference to a Joseph SHEPHERD (incl. var. spell.) within the St Mary, Kirkby Lonsdale register in the 18th century. Their first two children were baptised within Mansergh (Jonathan 1751, John 1753), yet following this, baptisms ceased to be held within Mansergh for a period. Therefore, although the remainder of their children were baptised within Middleton, they may not have resided there.

Both Joseph and Anne moved to Docker, as she was recorded as being of Docker Hall, when buried in Kirkby Lonsdale on the 25 Mar 1775. Joseph's second wife, Jane {married name ADDISON}, was also buried within Kirkby Lonsdale on the 8 Jul 1801, being of Docker Hall, aged 58. Finally, Joseph himself was buried in Kirkby Lonsdale on the 12 Jul 1817, being of Docker and aged 88. Joseph left a will, probate dated the 5 Jan 1818.

Therefore, in this case, it appears as though Joseph's age on his marriage bond was reasonably accurate, yet don't assume that the same applies to the age of his first wife Anne.

I did not have the death/burial for Anne nor that she and Joseph were living at Docker Hall Farm in 1775.  I find especially interesting that their first son was named Jonathan and subsequently another son with Anne and a son with second wife Jane.  Using the 'naming pattern' this would probably indicate that Joseph's father was Jonathan?  I have found (online but not confirming in records in the archives) a baptism in Bentham -relatively near to Kirkby Lonsdale - in 1728 of Joseph Shepherd son of Jonathan Shepherd.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to look up this information - and any thoughts most welcome !     Brenda
