In both the Rector's book and the Parish Clerk's book at Astbury, the birth is recorded as -
Mary, dr of Margaret Forster of Somerford Booth.
It could be significant that other entries close by in the Registers, where only the mother's name is recorded, have 'illegit' dr / son of -- recorded: and Mary's does not. Did the Rector know that she (Margaret) was a widow or an abandoned wife? Or did she tell him that she was?

Hi williamtov,

Thanks, I'm loving the above.

It's really interesting to see other babies being recorded as illegitimate where Mary is not. Like you say, I'm thinking that either the rector knew that Margaret was a widow or an abandoned wife (not considered abandonment until now - thank you again) or she was able to convince him that she was (this is where being born outside of Cheshire might have been to Margaret's advantage if she wanted to pass off an illegitimate birth as legitimate).

I'm going to look again for marriages in surrounding counties.

Loving this little family tree puzzle  ;D

A little info. on the hunt for William HACKNEY.

William HACKNEY appears, age 9, on the 1841 census living with Margaret FORSTER (and next-door but one to Peter and Mary ROBINSON and family - Margaret's married daughter).

Who was William HACKNEY and could he help shed any light on Margaret FORSTER?

I'm trying to pin William down. I want to find his baptism and have a look at who his parents where.

I've ruled out the following baptisms;

Astbury, St. Mary 01/02/1830
William s. Peter & Elizabeth Hackney, Somerford

Hatherlow, Bradbury, Stockport (Independent) b. 08/06/1831 bapt. 10/03/1833
William s. Charles & Hannah Hackney, Bredbury

I'm working through some more now....

Hi rolnora,

Good catch! I'm sure this is the correct William HACKNEY - thanks.

I've just looked at a scan of the BT's and noticed three HACKNEY siblings, with different dates of birth, all getting baptised on the same day.

Astbury, St. Mary
Ann b. 06/07/1825, bapt. 01/11/1835
George b. 04/09/1829, bapt. 01/11/1835
William b. 20/01/1831, bapt. 01/11/1835

What's even more interesting than all three siblings getting baptised together is that the baptisms appear to have taken place AFTER the death of their mother, Ann;

Astbury, St. Mary
b. 21/07/1835
Ann wife of William Hackney, labourer, Somerford Booths, 29 years (born c. 1806)

And even more interestingly, the first child of William and Ann appears to have been a year old when her parents married;

Prestbury, m. 15/05/1826
Married by banns
William Hackney of Marton, servant
Ann (x) Barber of Marton, spinster
Witnessed by James Pimlett and Thomas Robinson

Marton fits well with Somerford Booths as they closely bordered each other.

The elder two HACKNEY siblings are also in Somerford Booths on the 1841 census (like their brother William with Margaret FORSTER). It looks like they were being cared for by people other than their father after the death of their mother.

I'm going to give the above a bit of a mull now - lol.

I had found the Hackney/Barber marriage but not the other baptisms, good find :)
Assuming that either William or Ann were related to Margaret and remembering that Margaret was born, according to the 1841 census out of county, I have been searching for a baptism that will connect them in someway though I haven't found anything so far ::)

Hi !  I am trying to track down the Hackney of Marton and have about the same info as you. There are a couple of family 'myths' about William(1831) but I have had no luck tracking down his grandparents. The Barbers - Ann's family, were probably the tenant farmers at Marton Hall and father William was supposed to have been a stable worker. Ann's family seemed to have stayed on at the Hall but did not take her children in - family dispute over her relationship with William? Cannot find any connection with your Mary. Perhaps she was just a good hearted soul. If you do find anything else I would be delighted to hear. Marton Hall was a tenanted farm from Capesthorne Hall.

It has been sometime since I checked out this thread. Has anyone gained anymore info on William Hackney who married Ann Barber ? Very grateful as William is as far back as I can go with that branch of the family tree.
