Dr William Norford of Bury
« on: Tuesday 03 February 15 09:37 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know the names of the children of this man - I think there may have been 26 of them by two different wives?

I have a brick wall that I've nearly taken down but... I have a woman, Anne said in her obit to be the niece of the doctor. I know her mother's name was Eleanor but whether she was a Norford or married to one I haven't been able to find out.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Colin I've just put his name into Wikipedia (should have done it before obviously!) and it says that
Norford was apprenticed to John Amyas, a surgeon in Norwich, and then began to practice at Halesworth in Suffolk, as a surgeon and man-midwife. He married the daughter of a surgeon, and after some years moved to Bury St Edmunds. So it looks as if the first family were all of Halesworth?

Dr. William Norford, b abt 1720 in Suffolk, England. Died 1793, 73 yrs old.
Note: Death date and his age are according to Memorial Plaque found at Global gravestone site
   http://www.gravestonephotos.com/public/cemetery.php?cemetery=1943&scrwidth=1258

Married Isabel Nights in 1745, she died before 1759. doc from FindMyPast

Marriage to Sarah Miller, 20 May 1759, Halesworth, Suffolk, England. Doc from FindMyPast.
Sarah Miller b. abt 1736, Norwich, Norfolk, England. Daughter of Thomas Miller 1692-1764 and Elizabeth Bacon 1706-1756.

Siblings of Sarah Miller were; Elizabeth Miller (1729-?); Thomas Miller (1731-1804); Lois Miller (1733-1814); Dr. Edward Miller (Dr. of Music) (1735-1807); Mary Miller (1740-?); Louisa Miller (1746-?).

THE WILL OF LOIS MILLER 1733-1814
SARAH NORFORD, sister of Lois Miller, mentioned in Lois Miller's Will, also a daughter named Sarah Norford and Annabelle mentioned.

THE WILL OF SARAH MILLER 1734-1810
Sarah Miller 1734-1810 was the daughter of Edward Miller (1690-?)and Mary Mullins (1703-1756) mentions her cousins Lois Miller and Sarah Miller Norford, wife of Dr William Norford.

Eldest son of Dr. William Norford and Sarah was listed on Grave Plaque as Thomas, abt 1761, death abt 1787 (26 yrs old). Burial Place: Bury St. James, Suffolk, England.

The rumors of him having 26 children, is probably just that, "a rumor". I've never found any info on that.
I hope this helps.

Best Wishes,
chaplin
