Forge House, Mold Road, Gwersyllt, Wrexham.
« on: Wednesday 04 February 15 17:16 GMT (UK) »
Thomas Barlow and his brother James Barlow lived at Forge House 1840's.  Is this building still standing?  Both Thomas and James were Iron masters and they owned a business connected with Iron smelting or forge in Gwersyllt. Does anybody have Information please,  I have looked on Google earth nothing showing.

Mike.

A tentative suggestion. In the 1851 census the Forge House is close to a number of "Wheatsheaf" entries.(There are also entries in the 1891 census for Forge Houses close to the Wheatsheaf Inn)
Go  to www.old-maps.co.uk and use the postcode LL11 4LD as the search term, then go to the 1900 1:2500 map.In a line continuing from Wheatsheaf through Gwersyllt station, the first block of buildings on the left has "Smithy" marked at the limit of resolution without subscription. This position looks equivalent to a Mold Road address.Whether,in this instance forge(relating to an ironmaster)and smithy are synonymous,I don't know.

Regards
Roger

You might find the NLS maps easier to use than Old-maps - once a useful free resource it is now subscription only, and since the most recent changes is virtually useless and more trouble than it is worth as zoomability is severely limited, and you can no longer enter addresses.

I hope this takes you to the NLS side by side view, which is useful if you want to compare old with new:

There doesn't appear to be a Forge House named, but using Roger's 'Smithy' idea, and it's location on  the old map, sadly it is no longer standing.

Tithe maps would probably have the occupiers names and location.

There is a smithy marked on an 1891 map I have. It was by the Horseshoe Inn, now demolished.
It was opposite the Wheatsheaf Inn, still standing.

Is that the same Smithy as in the NLS map above (it's just north of Gwersyllt Station)?

James barlow's headstone makes reference to the forge and wireworks.  Gwersyllt wireworks is on the next map North of the one shewn, still on Mold Rd, shewn as disused.

There is reference in British newspapers online to an auction of equipment on the premises at the gwersyllt forge and wireworks", implying that they were one factory.

It may be that the original forge house was on or near this site.

The ones shown on the map are in Cefn Y Bedd. They  are close to Syddalt.

There were other wireworks in Bradley, but in the 1830s these were managed by John Senior, Eyton and Littlewood, Moss & Co. John Senior died in 1836.

I still  think your best bet is the tithe maps.
