You have William's mother's name (an illigitimate birth given the surname and only mother's name?). What is the source for this?

From the post above, there is one birth showing in Moray on the official pay to view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk You could view the birth entry from 1909 (in Elgin) to see if this matches what you have regarding mother's name etc.

Monica, thankyou for this information. I think you have the right man. His mother was known to my family but I know nothing of the father.

There may not be anything on the father on record.... If William's birth record simply showed his mother's name, and William never recorded father's name elsewhere, there may be no record on the name of his father. You can make guesses that the surname of Main may connect to reputed father (also maybe the name William) but hard to prove really. Not uncommon really for this type of event really...

William Main Mathieson is in my tree. He was born on 8 May 1909 at 205g High Street, Elgin. His mother was Margaret Mary Gordon Mathieson, born 11 November 1881 at The Wards, Elgin and died 3 March 1976 at Newlands, Tynet. I don't know anything more about him and would be happy to exchange notes if you have more information.

Yo're quite right. Slip of the finger. I have about 5 generations of her ancestors. At least I have learned from this thread that he died in New Zealand.
