Minnie Cowan
« on: Saturday 07 February 15 09:05 GMT (UK) »
Seeking evidence that my great auntie Minnie Cowan committed suicide around the early 1880s? Minnie was born about 1867, the daughter of Frederick Cowan & Fanny Cowan nee Richardson. They were living in the West Ham region of London during that period. I also cannot find Minnie's marriage nor an entry in the 1891 Census. Family stories abound to the effect that she died as a teenager through tragic circumstances. Any help is much appreciated Thanks in anticipation. Cheers Rob.

There is a death of a Minnie COWAN aged 17, registered in the West Ham district in 1883 4th qtr, vol 4A, page 85.

This fits with the information you have given, so it would appear she did not marry.

Who did Minnie marry, please?

If she committed suicide in the 1880's she would not be in the 1891 census.

Do you mean Fanny's marriage and 1891 census?

Think Fanny is Fanny Springett in 1901

Marriages September quarter 1900
on same page:
Fanny Cowan         W. Ham    4a   469
John Springett         W. Ham    4a   469

Added:
1891 Fanny is still Cowan, and family is fairly obvious.

Thanks all and yes I mentioned Minnie's non appearance as backing up my faith in the story! Does anyone know if any newspaper accounts of her death/and her suicide or otherwise? Thanks Rob

What does it say on her death certificate?

What newspaper archives have you searched?
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

I can't find any reference to her death in the papers, I suggest you apply for the death certificate with the reference I gave you, that will confirm, one way or another, how she died.
