ASHCROFT PLACE, Waterside
« on: Saturday 07 February 15 21:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi, Trying to trace Ashcroft Place, nearest I've got so far, is that it was of Strabane old road. Sounds like the area was trashed for new builds in the 60s/70s like most of U.K. The reason I ask is that my eldest sister was born there when my Mother & Father resided in Derry for a year at the start of WW2.
(Dad was escorting convoys across the Atlantic).
It would be nice (1) To plot the site on a Google map with the co-ordinates, and (2) Obtain/purchase a photograph of the cottages (8-10? I believe from the census) somewhere if possible.Thank you.

Hi,
There is an Ashcroft and an Ashcroft Close in Waterside, near Strabane Old Road and the Glenshane Road.

Thanks kingskerswell for your reply. I'll try and dig deeper, I really require an old street map of the fifties, trouble is, everything single thing is copywrighted these days!

This article confirms Ashcroft Place was indeed off Strabane Old Road and lists some residents there in 1957:

The Roads abandonment order for Ashcroft Place was in 2005.

Have you emailed the library to ask if they can assist you?

Hi,
Doreen got back to me with some details together with a old street plan. From what I can make out together with Google street view, Ashcroft place was at 13(approx.), old strabane road behind ANNES BAR and Herbert street was between NIPPY TAXI'S and KIERA'S CHIPPY at 21(approx.) ,old strabane road. This information is for anyone in the future who might be inquiring, this is my best guess so don't take this as verbatim. Still looking for a photograph which I know is a long shot for my sister and mum( she is 96 and still going strong)...........Cheers!

hi there
your post caught my eye because of Ashcroft. i was reared at the Belt and Trench rd, Strabane old road junction, in a farmhouse known as Ashcroft.  so i followed up your lead today when i was in Derry.  I checked with locals and took some photos for you. which you probably already have from google anyway.  you are right that Herbert St. was between the Chinese & Kiera's chippy. While Ashcroft place was along the side of Annies pub.  Apparently Annies pub was moved. it used to be farther over to the left of the picture, where there is now a stone plaque. Because of events during the troubles it was tumbled. Annies now occupies the space at the other corner of the street that would previously have been Quiggs wee shop. It seems that Quiggs would have been the corner of Ashcroft Place. Hope this makes sense to you.  I called in at Nippys taxi place and also asked further about possible pics of the area.  He put in touch with another place that may be able to help, and apparently held a photo exhibit of the area last summer.  with any luck it may prove fruitful for you.     I will not post his details publicly. so will see if i can figure out how to private message you,  or if you want to email me , you are welcome: See next post.

Hi Val.(margymore),
Many thanks for your P.M. and will be looking into the leads I received from you. Alas no pictures, maybe the photographs might need to be re-sized when you scan them, a lot of forums will only except a certain size of picture (MB) for uploading. anyway thanks for taking the time to write and making Ashcroft place clearer for everyone, that's the beauty of the internet!
