Ellen Sullivan (Spillane)
« on: Sunday 08 February 15 19:22 GMT (UK) »
I had all but posted this yesterday then Rootschat went down and I lost it all, so I'm posting this morning before I go to work.

My 2nd great grandmother was Ellen Sullivan and that is the extent of my knowledge.

Ellen was the mother of my great grandmother, Bridget (1884-1947), and her siblings Catherine 'Katie' (1886-1973) and Dennis (1888-1970). Their father was Peter Spillane (1846-1927).

The children were born, and the family resided at Balliverane (spelling changes with every record), In Milltown, Killarney.

In the 1901 census, Peter is listed as widower.

Ellen Sullivan is a common name and I'm trying to at least find a marriage.  Any help would be appreciated.

Finn/Clifford - Callinafercy and Scort, Kerry
Spillane - Milltown
Also:- Byrne / Tyrrell - Dublin

Here's Dennis' baptism in case you haven't seen it already-

Another relative? (possibly father Peter?)

Possible marriage?

Hi Aghadowey, thank you for those. I did have the 2 baptisms and I have seen that marriage, which I will order to see if the groom's father matches. However, it's 12 years between the marriage and Bridget's birth. That's not to say there weren't other children who haven't been identified.  There is a marriage at a later date between a Peter Spillane and Ellen Sullivan in Fermoy but I'm yet to establish any connection to Cork.

You're a star, Dathai. I don't know why I didn't find them. Perhaps I need to not use dates in searches. Those births, with Nov 1872 as the earliest, makes the marriage Aghadowey found a great match. Now instead of three 3 in the family there may be 8 and a gap between the end of the records in 1881 and my great grandmother's birth in 1884. I note that there is a Kate born in 1880 and I have Catherine 'Katie' born 1886 so I would say the first one didn't survive.

Irish records don't record siblings, do they?

Thanks so much.

No. See here for details on Irish birth certificates-

Thanks, Aghadowey, I realised the answer after I posted it as I have quite a few of them...I'm putting it down to sleep deprivation.  It's our (being Victorian) records that list them.
