booth family of cheshire
« on: Monday 09 February 15 16:50 GMT (UK) »
hi I am researching my great grand's maternal side of the family.  so far I know his mom was Martha booth born in marton (whitegates) Cheshire in 1849, she married Thomas hooley dec 1877 but died sept 1878, my great grand dad Wesley was born 18th august 1878.  her mom was mary booth born 1825 whitegates.  I think her parents were Thomas and Elizabeth.

I have a picture of the booth family showing  mary booth, Malcolm booth, ruth booth. amos booth and annie etchells. the centre two being mr and mrs booth.  it would appear that Martha was given a leather bound volume of the pilgrims progress for her 21st birthday, but I don't think she could read. did the family belong to a particular religious family.

also I found mary working as head house keeper at rake hall, stoak.  are there any household details left.  this would fit in with what my mother used to tell us that there was a hall with a photograph of the family.,

can t seem to find much about the rest of the family on either of the family history sites.

any help much appreciated

thanks

Her marriage to Thomas Hooley does not give a fathers name  ::)

hi everyone

thanks for that information.  yes I knew Martha did not have any father named on her marriage cert, although she did have wm gillott as her witness.  on 1861 census she is still with the gillotts and they have her down as neice.  john was married to anne nee maddock so that now fits in. not actually a blood relative but a member of the family that took the child in.

still no joy in finding out who the members of the family are on the photograph that I have. showing Malcolm and ruth who look older than mary and amos booth.

the booths seem to be a popular name in the Cheshire area with quite biblical names and was wondering if they belonged to a certain religion.

thanks again for your help
