Lucy Evans mystery
« on: Monday 09 February 15 20:02 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I hope someone can help resolve this query.

Lucy Evans appears on the 1881 census as living in the household of Elisha Bevan 21 Britannia Rd Llantrisant (piece 5297, folio 119, page 36).

Relationship to head is adopted daughter.

Birthplace Cefn
Where would Cefn be?

I have found a baptism for a Lucy Evans Aberdare Chapelry Hirwaun  on 21 March 1872.
Would this tie in with the birth place of Cefn? Of course I dont know if it is the same Lucy Evans.

I cant find any trace of Lucy on any census, marriage or death after the 1881census

Can anyone out there help me find out where she came from & what happened to her?

Thanks

It's got Brecon after Cefn on the census.

Have you checked under Lucy Bevan - maybe she took that surname?

Hello Milliepede

Thanks for your reply.

Glump! didn't think of looking under the name of Bevan as the name Evans was used on the census. There are some possiblilities I'm thinking that adoptions then weren't as we know them today.

Doesn't Cefn mean ridge in Welsh - there are some Cefn ---- (place name or description ) in Brecon. Was wondering if someone who referred to Cefn  meant a particular place

Thanks again

If we could tie down her birth registration in Brecon the certificate would show a mothers name at least.

She's not with the same family in 1891 but at 17 could well be out on her own as a servant or something living in another household.

Nothing obvious coming up for her under Bevan either  :-\

Hello Keyboard

Elisha Bevan married Mary Ann Drew 18 May 1868 in Monmouth Parish Church - by licence.
Am wondering what the difference is between banns & licence?

Yes Milliepede - that's the right marriage.

Still wondering if there should be another word or place name after Cefn

Thanks

It's quite possible there should be another word after Cefn - names do tend to get shortened (round my way Cefn = Cefn Coed y Cymmer), but which one, or if it is a local area name now lost I don't know. There is a Cefn y Parc cemetery in Llantrisant that could be related in some way?

Don't think the Hirwaun Lucy is yours - there is a Lucy Ann Evans the right age b Hirwaun on the 1881 and 1891 census
