Don't you use the wildcard facility?  You have to remember that there are literally thousands of mis-transcriptions so whenever you don't find somebody using the normal spelling - you try with the wildcard search (eg) I would have used ca*rol* which would cover a missing r or l from the surname

There is a widowed Sarah Carroll in Wigton in 1891.

My apologies that I gave the wrong spelling of Carroll in my earlier reply.

However, I agree with Carole - if you can't find the person you are looking for with the spelling you expect, then always search for them again using variants for the surname or using wildcards.

Alternatively, since (I assume) you must have known where she was born you could have tried searching simply for Sarah born Great Clifton c. 1863. Using Ancestry this finds her immediately.

Apologies, I have never used wildcards before, nor have I heard about them. However I will use them more often to save time.

Further investigation, Sarah, with the name Herriott died in 1946, which explains why I couldn't find her under Carroll.

1911 census at All Hallows Colliery
George Herriott, 50, colliery horsekeeper, b Surrey
Sarah, wife, 49, (occupation) 'below ground', b Great Clifton
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Sarah died in 1946, no children with Herriott.

George is also the informant on the death certificate of her mother Martha.

Still yet to find a death for Thomas Carroll, though he most definitely would have passed away between 1886, their marriage and 1891, when Sarah is listed as a widow

Have you used the wildcard search facility outlined in earlier replies?  Tho** Car***

Do you have the 1886 marriage cert - was Thomas a mariner?  Could he have died at sea?  How old was he on the marriage cert?

Have you searched freebmd on a staged date basis for all deaths for a Thomas in Cumberland in case of mis- spelling?
