George P Oates Family
« on: Wednesday 11 February 15 01:56 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I have been researching George P Oates for about 20 years with out much progress.  Hope to find someone else researching this family.  George was from St Austell, was a miner and born approx 1829. I believe he was probably born much earlier. He was a Mason at Tavistock, Devon in 1847, If he was born in 1829, he would have only been 18 and I am not sure if he could have been a Master Mason at that age.  He came to the United States in 1855.  He married Martitia Coffin but he never became a citizen of the United States.  He named his daughters Mary and Martha. I am trying to attach him to parents in England.   I am working on the possibility that he was the son of George and Mary Ann Parsons Oates.  If this is his family, his mother would have been born in Tavistock, Devon. There also appear to be many years between births for George and Mary Ann. Possible that George may have been away working in mines,  I would really appreciate any thoughts or possibilities.

Yes, this is my George P Oates.   I have extensive handwritten documents by George himself which also includes the Tavistock Devon Masons certificate that met at the Bedford Hotel.  George stated to the British Consul in 1862 that he was from St. Austell.  He was filing a claim for stolen trucks during the civil war. I am working on the theory that it was 1824 instead of 1829 because of the age and condition of the document.  I have found no George Oates born 1829 in 20 years.  He also used Captain George P Oates and I do know he had a sister named Jane.

Don't have them in front of me but the US census has different ages for George.  He died approx 1880 in South American Mine.

Hi Sharon

if  you are researching Cornwall between parish registers and census records which looks as you may be, please check cornwall opc site.  I have seen their transcript of the 51 record you show and George jnr and snr are shown as lead and copper ore miners.

Also the gap in child ages - the younger children shown as born in another parish so may be an event or illness created the gap.  The transcription does emphasise the point.

The 1826 St Austell one may be yours as his Mothers Maiden name was PARSONS.
(this may be where the George P came from?)

Marriage;
27 Dec 1823, Holy Trinity, St Austell
George OATS Bachelor to Mary Ann PARSONS Spinster
Witnesses William Couch/Richard Williams

Childrens Baptisms under Oats/Oates;
CAROLINE, 7 March 1824
GEORGE, 25 Aptil 1824***
JAMES, 2 July 1826
ELIZABETH, 4 July 1830
WILLIAM, 2 June 1833
Fathers Occp Miner
(FreeREG)

From names on 1851 Census I cant find Baptisms on FreeREG or CornwallOPC for Phillip/Maryann/Jane/Martha.

This appears to be most of the above Children in 1841
HO107/134/10/Stoke Climsland
Geo Oats, 35, Miner
James Oats, 15
Elizth Oats, 11
William Oats, 9
