John McLaren
« on: Wednesday 11 February 15 10:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi!
I have a great, great grandfather that appears to be a mystery... He is believed to have been born about 1844, this we have worked out from marriage and birth certificates of his children. All but one of these certificates, state that he is known as John McLaren, however, there is one that states is name is John Alex McLaren. On the birth certificate of one of his daughters it states that he was born on Stirlingshire, Scotland. At some stage he has emigrated to Australia, where he married Mary Ann Dugan. They went on to have a number of children and that's as far as we get. We are unable to find his birth certificate as we have no confirmation on his birth date, nor do we have a death certificate as we have no idea where he ended up.
It is believed that his father's name was John, he may have possibly had a sister named Anne. It is believed that his father had something to do with Clydes Engineering ( near Edinburgh?). It is also been mentioned through family members from different branches of the family, unknown to each other, that about the late 1920's early 1930's an advert was placed in Newspapers in Australia, searching for a John McLaren  possibly to settle inheritance?)
I am hoping someone has a John Mcleod in their family that sounds like our John.
I look forward to any assistance :) Thank you, in anticipation!

Hi kymbilly

Do you have the names of the children? if so could you list them and their places of birth and dates.

Sometimes there are clues in the naming of children :-\

At the end of your message you say 'John McLeod' please confirm the correct name ;)

Hello
I see he married in Dubbo in 1867 and Mary Ann Dugan died there in 1887.
Daughters
Jane 1869
Margaret Jane 1870
Isabella Frnaces 1878
Eva Victoria 1883

Had a look at the Scotish censuses and could this be him?

1861 Chartershill Gateside St Ninians Stirling
John Mc Laren 54 tailor  Wimes Perthshire
Mary 50 Killin Perthshire
Alexander 18 ap baker
John 16 ap tailor
Margaret 9

1851Gateside St Ninians
John 44 sailor/tailor Thennaul Perthshire
Margery 39 Hilleaney
Margaret 10 St Ninians
Alexander 8
John 6
Isabella 4

1841 Back Row St Ninians
John Mc Laren 30 tailor

Possible marriage at St Ninians John McLaren and Marjory Mcpherson 15.10.1837

It's the only John Mclaren son of John McLaren born in Stirlingshire I can see and he does disappear after the 1861 census.

John McLaren was married to Mary Ann Dugan on 9th September, 1867.
Children I am aware of are:-
Jane b. 1869
Margaret b. 1869 d. 1870
John b. 1871
Barbara b. 1874
Isabella Frances b. 1878
Robert Phair
Thomas Dugan
Eva Victoria
William Albert
Lilly

I have been lead to believe his mother's name could be Margaret.

In Australia, he has been around Dubbo, NSW, the Melbourne area, as at least one of his children was born there in 1874.
Thanks again!!

Those census transcriptions have some pretty bizarre renderings on birthplaces.

According to the 1851 transcription at http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl John Sr was born in the parish of Kinnoull, Perthshire, and Margery in the parish of Killearn, Perthshire with a note saying 'PO Birth CHP possibly STI   '. I do not know what CHP means, but the parish of Killearn is in Stirlingshire.

However the parish of Killin, Perthshire is not (stating the obvious!) in Stirlingshire, so there is an inconsistency between the 1851 and 1861 (the 1861 is not yet available on FreeCEN). However as the 1861 listed above renders Margery as Mary, it may be that Killin is a misreading of Killearn in that transcription. I have no idea what 'Wimes' could be intended to mean.

Alway best to check any online transcription by looking at the original image at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk or on microfilm at a library. That way you can at least be sure that any transcription errors are your own.

Never trust a transcription on Ancestry to do anything more than guide you to the original.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Wimes - could it be Weem in Perthshire?

Interesting thought. Weem is from the Gaelic 'uamh' (pronounced roughly 'oo-av') meaning 'cave', and this also crops up in place names like Wemyss, which might sounds like Wimes.

It's not exactly next door to Kinnoull, however.
