Where to find a Ship's Log
« on: Saturday 14 February 15 00:12 GMT (UK) »
Can sks advise where to find a Ship's Log.

I'm searching for voyage of two ships.
The Barque "Dunorlan" from England to Launceston, Tasmania arriving 24th November 1863.

And the Ship "Windward" left Hobart, Tasmania 15th January 1865 for England.

Hoping to find a record of the Logs or Captain's Diaries of one or both vessels.
Kind regards

Hi

You could try CLIP - http://www.crewlist.org.uk/data/vesselsalpha.php they have some useful info on tracing ships and crews

but you may have more success if you get the ships Official Number (ON)

Hi Cliff,
Thanks for your reply and your suggestions.
Where can I get the ships numbers (ON) for both;
The "DUNORLAN" 1863  and the "WINDWARD"  1865.
Thanks for your help.
Kind regards

Hi Cliff,
Have now found the ON number for the DUNORLAN  ON 19500.
The WINDWARD two possible ships;
Barque, WINDWARD ON 28744 built 1860 London  OR
Sail, WINDWARD ON 27527 built 1860 Peterhead.
How can I find which WINDWARD was part-owned and captained by a George A LULHAM?
Kind regards

Have you tried the following reference text

http://catalogue.nla.gov.au/Record/1458167

"Log of logs : a catalogue of logs, journals, shipboard diaries, letters, and all forms of voyage narratives, 1788 to 1988, for Australia and New Zealand and surrounding oceans / by Ian Nicholson"

Also
http://prov.vic.gov.au/provguide-54  scroll down through to the heading "Some Published Sources"

Log of Logs is, (3 volumes) in my view, invaluable.

The vessel DUNORLAN was built in Sunderland in 1857. In 1863 she was registered in London.
Her 1864 Crew agreement can be obtained from
https://www.mun.ca/mha/holdings/viewcombinedcrews.php?Official_No=19500
This would cover the period 24/11/1863 it seems no logbook is available so the suggestion by majm re log of logs should be your first research point.
The vessel WINDWARD 28744
seems to be the one you are looking for
http://www.archive.org/stream/lloydsregisters43unkngoog#page/n547/mode/2up
You will note Lulham as her master.
If anywhere her 1865 logbook should be at NMM Greenwich.

Again, first look at log of logs.

“The well-known and favourite trading ship WINDWARD, arrived in port yesterday forenoon, after a lengthy passage of 119 days from Gravesend.  She is still in command of our old friend,  Captain G A Lulham, and the position of chief officer of the ship is filled by that gentleman’s son, Mr Geo LULHAM.  Mr Daniel being still second officer…..  "

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/8950403  Mercury (Hobart) 8 Jan 1877.

Geo  Allen LULHAM   “For London …. Fast sailing Barque WELLINGTON, ….. Geo Allen LULHAM, Commander”
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/2249051  Courier (Hobart) 12 Dec 1853

So, perhaps someone can check which “Windward” left Gravesend in September 1876 under Capt G A LULHAM or follow up on the 1877 Chief Officer (son of the captain) or the second officer (Mr Daniel)

George Allen LULHAM  :)
