Dufton - James DALTON 1841-1883
« on: Tuesday 17 February 15 11:54 GMT (UK) »
James built a HOUSE, SHOP & 'CROFT' in DUFTON village (according to the William FLEMING DIARY)  in the winter of 1882-83. He opened for business in spring 1883.

His widow, Jane DALTON, carried on the business until 1892. In the spring of that year she sold her HOUSE, SHOP, CROFT & GARDEN (again according to William FLEMING). The sale was also advertised in the PENRITH OBSERVER. RICHARDSON & CO. of APPLEBY acted as agents for the sale. GEORGE THOMAS, solicitor, of APPLEBY acted for Jane.

I have tried to work out which property in DUFTON this may be. Can anyone out there point me in the right direction to further my research?

I was hoping that it might appear on the 1891 census, but in the column for address it just says shop and dwelling

I know it's a little later but wonder if you would get any information from the 1910 Land Survey.
Valuation Office survey: land value and ownership 1910-1915

Hi Judy
Thanks for your interest in my DUFTON problem. I do seem to have solved it recently by putting an advert in the local paper. I wish I had tried much sooner! I notice you have SMITH as one of your interests-me too. Where are yours from (mine DUFTON).
Regards
Wendy
