John KELLY c1810. / John LYONS c1836
« on: Tuesday 17 February 15 15:31 GMT (UK) »
John is an ancestor on my fathers side. Married to a Catherine Proctor c1812. The information I have is that he was born in bennekerry.  I was told by someone that I wouldn't be able to go any further back because records were burnt. Is this true? And if not where do I go next ?

Same as John Lyons c1836. Born in Carlow. Married to a Margaret Downes c1862. I found out he was a 38th Reg Infantry Soldier but nothing about his life in the army. I'd love to know more. If anyone can point me in a good direction.

As regards the burnt records have a read of this, not everything was lost.

These records should be online later in the year free but you need to know the parish and some of the images are very poor.

There is also the subscription site RootsIreland which has transcriptions only but is searchable by name.

Hi, this is off the beaten track but I wonder. Are you sure that the lady who married John Kelly had the last name of Proctor? I only ask as I didn't find a marriage for Proctor but I did fnd the following;

Marriage:

16 February 1813

Kilmacow,county Kilkenny

groom: John Kelly  Roman Catholic

bride:Catherine Heneberry  Roman Catholic

witnesses: James Heneberry & Patrick Connelly

I know this is a bit unusual and all but where county Kilkenny borders county Carlow and Catherine Heneberry is probably from county Kilkenny (as marriages normally took place in bride's parish) you may want to relook at info. Maybe this may be record you seek. Just a thought......... Kim

Cheers. It's an avenue I can research. I'm going from info I received from a researcher in Ireland. But I will look. Thank you.
