I've gone back to 1841 to trace Magnus but there are 2 "possibilities"

One is transcribed as Magwat aged 10 but is shown as male.  Living in Wick with what appears to be relatives although one of the younger females may be his mother.

The other is Magnus but a bit younger - aged 7 and living in Latheron with parents James (occ fisherman)  & Emelia and a lot of siblings

In 1851 there is a Magnus Miller b 1829 Latheron parents Donald & Christina

To be certain - I think you need to look at the 1859 marriage entry to see who his parents were

Just to say if you ever get to Wick there is a massive file full of information on the Swansons in the library (at least one!) so masses of information, not to mention lists of all the graves by surname, family trees etc.

Yes, I know Margaret's Maiden name was Miller.  I noticed on the 1901 census, the two oldest children are not mentioned, John and Maggie, John would have been 17 and Maggie 15, maybe they were out of the house and working.

My grandmother is Maggie. She left Wick around the age of 15 and after travelling via south africa spent the rest of her life in Australia. There was another son Angus who was the youngest of the family who was born after John and Maggie had left. I am in touch with the family of Carrie, James, angus.

Hello Karen. I believe we have the same family history. Looking at your post from 2015, i can tell you that my grandmother is Maggie Swanson, the second child of John Swanson and Margaret Miller. I di have some information on the family if you are still interested. The youngest member of the family was Angus who was not born when the 1901 census was published. I am in touch with members from the family of James and Carrie. Uncle Angus never married and had no children. It would ne nice to be in touch with you and fill in other gaps in our family tree. Maggie left Scotland aged 15 and settled in Australia which is where I live.
