Dorset Wills
« on: Friday 20 February 15 01:32 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find a Will for Jonathon Field who died in Sherborne Dorset in February 1809. I'm not really certain that he made a Will but he was a tailor and had property so I am assuming such. All the indexes I search for Dorset Wills end in 1799 and I can't find any at all for the period that I'm interested in. DFHS haven't really answered my query - they just say they can't find a Will for him. So my question is - does anyone know if Dorset Wills for 1809 still exist? Your help is most gratefully received   :)

Dorset History Centre (Records Office) should know.  They have an enquiry e-mail -

archives at dorsetcc dot gov dot uk
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

Wills held at the Dorset History Centre (ie the Records Office) have been available to view on ancestry for several years with digital images and that includes all those proven in 1809.  I can't see one for a Jonathan Field using the search facility, nor is there one for a Jonathan Field in Dorset amongst the Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills on ancestry.  Its worth bearing in mind, although it may now have been fixed, but when the Dorset Wills were first uploaded any administrations were indexed under the name of the person granted probate and not under the name of the deceased so a search under the place name sometimes through up a result. ::)

Try the Wiltshire History Centre, you can search their on line catalogue for wills, I know they hold some wills for Dorset, I recently found one for Sherborne.

Hi, just looked at Sherborne section of opcdorset and that lists wills up to 1857 but none for Jonathon Field.

Thanks Jusnoneed - I didn't think of Dorset OPC for Wills! It seems as though Jonathon Field must have died without a Will  :'(
