Birth of Patrick Conniff (born circa 1828 in Galway)
« on: Friday 20 February 15 15:08 GMT (UK) »
Good afternoon,

I was wondering whether anybody could be of assistance in locating a baptism/birth record for a certain Patrick Conniff born in Galway around 17 March of that year. News in the family has given rise to us believing that he may have been born in Ballinasloe to Matthew (1790-1840) and Honor Conniff (1786-1864).

We understand that the family moved to England sometime in the 1830s as they appear as living in Wellington in Shropshire on the 1841 census. The family moved about in England and Wales before they settled in the Rhondda Valley, where Patrick died at 36 Church Road, Ystradyfodwg. On a similar note, the family believes that he is likely to be buried at Treorchy cemetery - if anybody has any information on his place of burial that would also be appreciated.

Kind regards,

Lynda

This map shows the RC parishes in East Galway- if you click on Ballinasloe it says baptism records start 1820 (with several sources listed)-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi,
Have you got his marriage cert to get the correct Fathers name?
There are 3 Patrick Conniff(e) born in Galway 1828 plus and minus 5 years, none to a Matthew.
then one to a Honour Dillon and a Matt (Matthew) Cunniff but his name is Francis. But he may have had Patrick as a second name. He was born in Ballinasloe. He was Baptised on the 25th May 1830.
Just using both the parents names Francis is the only child born to them. You really need his marriage cert. Who did he marry?

Hi Maggy,

Thanks very much for getting in touch. Funnily enough, Frances was Patrick's younger sister, we actually already hold the record that you have mentioned. Patrick can be found in the 1841 England census living with his mother, Honor, and sisters, Frances and Margaret. His father, Matthew, had died the year before in 1840 on 8th November at New Street, Wellington, Shropshire. We know that both Honor and Matthew are buried at the All Saints Church in Wellington.

Patrick Conniff married twice, once in 1850 to Ann Charles in Shropshire before her death in 1860. That same year, he married Mary Morris in 1860 in Alverstoke. On that marriage certificate, it notes Matthew Conniff as his father.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Lynda
