Marriage of Francis Cox & Margaret at Broseley, Shropshire
« on: Saturday 21 February 15 05:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Wonder if anyone could assist me please.
Our GGG Grandfather was Francis Cox born 1745, we think Broseley, Shropshire.
We believe he married a Margaret (surname unknown) we are unable to find his marriage,
but know that Francis and Margaret had a son John Cox b. 1783 he was baptised at St. Leonard's Church, Broseley in December 1783.

We would love to find their marriage, definintely know that there were three other children born to them in England, namely Samuel b 1785, Thomas b. 1787 and Ann b. 1789.

By 1789 Francis Cox had become a convicted criminal and transported to Australia with the 2nd fleet in 1791, and left his family in England destitute.

We have much information on Francis Cox's life in Australia, but would like to know more about his marriage, and his wife's family as well in England.   Have Margaret's death certificate, she lived to the age of 95 years passed away in St Johns Wood, London in 1846, however she had lived at Wolverhampton prior to that.

If anyone could assist me with the marriage, I would be most grateful, would like to know more on Margaret's family.

Regards
jan

Hiya Janjim - this could be one of those "Curate Mistranscriptions "
John Cox baptism is as John Cock  !! - so - could Francis and Margaret marriage be as Cock as well ??

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JMX5-Q2Q

this baptism - probably a Nephew of Francis seems to confirm the surname as Cock - same church and period

Hi Garstonite
Thanks so much, yes that definitely confirms their son John Cox, and it appears Francis Cock definitely their son.  We know that Frances Snr had a brother William.

Now to find Francis & Margaret's marriage.  Would love to know Margaret's maiden name, so that we can search further.

Cheers

Hi Garstonite,
Francis Cox and the family in Australia said he left his wife behind in England, of course as a convict he set up a relationship with another convict lady in Sydney, and had more family
John Cox came to Australia in 1810 to find out what happened to his Father as a Private in the 73rd Regiment, and found his Father set up with another family.  So yes, it is possible that he never married Margaret in England.

Margaret Cox died in 1846 aged 95 years.    So we assume that she was born in 1751.
Amazing age really.

What I am looking at is - firstborn is John ...so - usually named after the father or grandfather - as we have Francis as father we now look for a Margaret - father John..b close to 1751 in the Broseley area?

3 miles away we have
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JWCG-QDM

I am clutching at straws with this one but she is the closest to the marriage place ..although christened 1752 , she may have been born earlier

Hi again Garstonite,
Yes very interesting, could be, I am also having difficulty in finding marriage of son John Cox (Cock) to Sarah Jones, they were living at St. Johns Wood in 1841 census.    John Cox spent 4 years in Australia with his convict father, then returned and later set up business as a Locksmith at St Johns Wood.   John & Sarah had children Annie Margaret, Maria, George Francis, Martha, Sarah, William, Thomas all living at St. Johns Wood.

Certainly getting a blank on both of them for possible marriages.   Death Certificate for Sarah Cox in 1888 in Australia, shows her parents as George Arthur Jones a Stonemason and Susan Bailey.
It is strange that not one of the children appears to have the Christian name of Susan.

John Cox married Sarah Jones on xmas day 1809 at Halesowen ,Worcester
could this be them ??

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N29L-9NT

do you think this is your John / Sarah ??...b 1783 would make him 26 at the marriage - so his age fits ?
ADDED....Halesowen to Broseley is 27 miles ....

Sounds great, only thing is, Sarah died 1888 aged 84 years, so too young I'm afraid for her, she would only have been 5 years of age !.
Not only that they didn't start having children until 1833.   As far as we know it appears that Sarah was 20 years younger than John.
