Benjamin, John, Charles and Martha Sheppard
« on: Saturday 21 February 15 07:43 GMT (UK) »
I have Martha Sheppard 1841 at Crooked Billet Yard, St Leonard, Shoreditch with three children Benjamin 3, John 2, and Charles 3 months and I can't find them in 1851 or 1861
I think Martha married James Mitten 1865 St Mary Lambeth, Surrey
There was a marriage bann record 1841 but they don't seem to have married until 1865 after James had married other females
I have located a baptism 14 Feb 1836 St Mary, Newington, Surrey with father James Mitten and mother Martha - this Benjamin Charles Mitten may be living with James Mitten and wife Pursis and another child and Samuel
It is a mixed up set of records and I am trying to sort out - but would like to find births or baptisms to match 1841 census with Martha (the children had Sheppard name in census) - looking for any clues such as address on baptism or occupation
There is a Charles Sheppard Q 2 1841 Shoreditch London Vol 2 page 390 birth index
and John Sheppard Q2 1840 Shoreditch Vol 2 page 360
not sure how children are registered either Sheppard or Mitten - still trying to make some sense of the information so looking for some clues to sort out
Any assistance appreciated ... Alison - Australia

Hi

There's a death for Charles Shepperd in Shoreditch 1841 Q4 V2 P300

which fits in with a burial for Chas Shepperd at St Matthew's Bethnal Green on 20 Nov 1841 age 8 months with an abode of Kingsland Road (which is in Shoreditch)

There are 4 John + variants Sheppard + variants in Shoreditch in the 1840s

My favourites would be

John Sheppard 1847 Q3 V2 P305

or

John Sheppard 1848 Q1 V2 P364

Didn't come across any corresponding burials

There are also another 9 possible deaths before the 1861 census using the same criteria
Middlesex: KING,  MUMFORD, COOK, ROUSE, GOODALL, BROWN
Oxford: MATTHEWS, MOSS
Kent: SPOONER, THOMAS, KILLICK, COLLINS
Cambs: PRIGG, LEACH

Charles Sheppard burial Bethnal Green 1841 looks good - Kingsland Road appears often with this family - can I view the document somewhere?     I found the death index you mentioned but not the burial Bethnal Green
Thanks for your time and effort, regards Alison

The baptism for Benjamin Charles Mitten 14 February 1836 birth date 22/1/1836 father James Mitten mother Martha ...I would say this is the same Benjamin with the father in th 1851 census

Marriage for Benjamin Charles Mitten 19 December 1885 St Bartholomew Moor Lane age 50 occupation labourer ..father James Mitten labourer
Spouse Francis Hawker age 48 both residing 6, Maidenhead Court

I did look on ancestry before I asked, but couldn't find it, then I went back after reading your message and had another look and found burial under the heading of Schools, Directories & Church Histories - Church Histories & Records  - previously looked under Birth, Marriage & Death - Death, Burial, Cemetery & Obituaries
Didn't know that other burials were under different section so I was glad you told me it was on ancestry which made me spend hours looking for it but I knew it had to be there because you said
Thanks again for helping.
Is there any where I can see the images referred to in the index you are suggesting for John
Thanks also for the info on marriage of Benjamin Charles Mitten ................. Alison

Sorry, didn't realise it would be tricky to find or I'd have supplied a link :-)

As for the others, you'd need to buy the certificates - £9.25 inc overseas postage

Thanks, might wait for other clues before buying certificates, a little expensive to get only to find it might not be correct, appreciate your time and effort, regards ............ Alison
