The Masters Family
« on: Saturday 21 February 15 20:17 GMT (UK) »
 The first thing I would like to ask is,does anyone know of The Black Horse Inn in Maidstone? If there's more than one,I'm talking about one that's been there a few hundred years.I found that an ancestor of mine was the landlady there,her name was Catherine Kennett and she was there in the 1850s as it's on the 1851 census.I think she died about 5 years later.I'd like some old photos or picture of what it looked like.I did contact the Inn but ,no reply.I've also tried the council but I'm not holding my breath.A society that deals in old Maidstone would,maybe,be where to look? Again concerning Maidstone,I know that there is a Henry Joseph Masters buried at All Saints in 1851 he was an infant, but I've been told that burials stopped there about 1850 and after that burials took place nearby. It's possible that the baby's father was buried in the same place,he had the same name and died in 1886.I've found it very difficult to get any info from Maidstone so can someone help please.

There are a couple of websites about Maidstone's old pubs

http://pubshistory.com/KentPubs/Maidstone/maidstone.shtml

http://www.closedpubs.co.uk/kent/maidstone.html

neither mention the Black Horse.

There is a Black Horse at Thurnham near Maidstone but the 1841 census lists Catherine as a publican in King Street, Maidstone.

I think it's the pub at Thurnham,Catherine was there 1851.I doubt she was the owner probably a tennent.I looked at all the sites suggested but I couldn't find anything helpful.It would have been good to find a picture from the 19th century.

We had lunch there earlier this week (they do nice food).

I'm sure there's an old photo in the bar - I'll check it out next time I go.

Are you sure she is on the 1851 Census?
Anc has a 1850 Will for Catherine Kennet , Probate 22 May 1850, Maidstone, which mentions Daughters;
Elizabeth
Eleanor
Mary
Emily
Charlotte
Louisa

1841 census has;
Catherine Kennett, 62, Publican
Ellen Kennett, 26
Emily Kennett, 23
Charlotte Kennett, 21
Louisa Kennett, 20
George Kennett, 30, Butcher
Address King Street

George is there 1851, birth c 1809, Occp Butcher

I may be "blind" but I cant find Catherine K in 1851

I couldn't see Catherine in 1851 either.

This 1847 Directory for Maidstone has a Catherine Kennett at The Dog & Bear, King Street, Maidstone

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mrawson/maiddir47.html

She is still listed in 1851
