Brillin or Brittin in Llanfairfechan?
« on: Sunday 22 February 15 18:44 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know where a place or property called either Brillin or Brittin is in Llanfairfechan?

I lived in Llanfairfechan many years ago but I cannot recall a place of that name.

My 3x G-grandfather William Roberts was born there in 1783. I have checked old maps but can only get back as far as the mid 1800's and nothing shows up. The last entry of its existence that I have, is of Richard Roberts my 4x G-grandfather's burial in the parish register in 1794.

The baptism record for William Roberts actually says Brillin/Brittin Row so I suspect its a row of cottages rather than a stand alone property.

Any ideas will be greatly received.

Thanks

Hi
I had a quick look around and can only find reference here on Melville Richards place name database

http://www.e-gymraeg.co.uk/enwaulleoedd/amr/cronfa_en.aspx

Brittain Row recorded in 1775 in Baron Hill papers p3304 (at Bangor University).  Perhaps a search of these papers may yield more.

Many thanks for the information Mair, it was very helpful.

Although it does not confirm where in Llanfairfechan the place is, it does however confirm the actual name Brittain Row and that it exists or existed.

The names Brillin and Brittin came from the parish registers and as you will know can be difficult to decipher as you go back in time.

Thanks again and kind regards,
