Looking for a place called Higher Derrite
« on: Monday 23 February 15 10:24 GMT (UK) »
I have a great grand father one John Bennett born in Higher Derrite,  St.  Creed in 1825. This is according to christening details on OPC.
His father was a tinner.   I have done a search for this place but had no luck.
The closest match might be Darite but not really populated until about 1840.  Prior to this it was known as Railway Terrace.
Does anyone have knowledge of such a place as Higher Derrite or Derrite that may have existed around 1825?
Thank you.

Hi you state his father was a Tinner. Does it gives his name please?
One would think of Cornwall tin mines and St something.

The actual parish was St Cleer! ;D
Baptism 28th August 1825
John Bennett, son of William (tinner) and Margaret of Higher Derrite

Just working from the transcription will prove difficult?
Ideally you need to see the handwriting on the Parish Register.

There is, nearby, a Higher Penquite? Maybe the place?

Sorry for my typo I meant St Cleer . I am doing these searches from Australia and find the systems some what different.
Perhaps I need to review the original.   How does one go about this from outside England.
Love the assistance that this group supplies. Certainly thank you for your input and expertise.
I took Higher Derrite as the place of birth of John and not Margaret the mother.

Higher Derrite is simply where William & Margaret were living at the time of the baptism!
It may have been just a farm or a cottage?!

It is possible to contact (via Cornwall OPC) the OPC for St Cleer.
Maybe she can offer some help? ;D

you can access that register from FamilySearch

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-12419-10342-46?cc=1769414&wc=M6NN-JWR:138123201,141049201,141050901

Certainly looks like Higher Derrite. Looking on this transcription
http://www.cornwall-opc.org/Records/parishes/A-D/cleer_st_baptisms18_2.php
there are several entries for Higher or Lower Derrite up to 1834 then a couple of entries in 1837-8 for Darite/Lower Darite. There are baptism entries with abode given as Derrite from at least 1814, it may have been a mining settlement.

the Cornwall Record Office online catalogue has a reference to John Darryte of Darite, St Cleer dated 1596, so possible the settlement would have been near there.
