Marriage of Edward Coates and Mary Ann Jefferson - abt 1870's in Leeds
« on: Monday 23 February 15 12:33 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for a marriage between Edward Coates b.1845 and Mary Ann Jefferson b.1849.  Both were born in Leeds according to their 1881 census.  They lived in Rider Street, Mabgate\Burmantofts and were CofE so suspect they were married in St Mary's as this is the closest church although I have no proof.

There is a record for a marriage between Henry Coates and Mary Ann Jefferson, marrying in Malton, Yorks, 1873, Vol 9d Page 787 but this is not the correct marriage i'm looking for.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I've been looking for this record for 6 months now!

Welcome to RootsChat! ;D

On both the 1881 and 1891 censuses, Mary Ann gives her birthplace as Thirsk.

May I ask, where did you find her maiden name?
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Thank you.

On the 1891 census it indeed shows her birth location as Thirsk but on her 1881 census it just shows Leeds, Yorkshire.

I got her maiden name from both her sons birth certificates where it shows "Mary Ann Coates, formely Jefferson"

Thanks and regards,

Is there a possibility that Jefferson was her maiden name, but may have married someone before Henry and then was widowed, so married under another name?

They certainly move around a lot - Lincolnshire in 1881 , Lancashire in 1891!

I can see Edward in censuses pre-marriage - have you found him?

Why have you ruled out the Coates/Jefferson marriage that you have found? Might Edward/Henry be the same person? Of brothers, but when the marriage didn't work out she moved in with brother Edward but they never actually married?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

I thought that so looked at all the Mary Ann Jefferson's (and all Mary Ann's to Edward Coates) married in Yorkshire and tracked them to see if that was the case.  I didn't find a match unfortunately.  I'm actually beginning to wonder whether they really did get married at all!  I am looking for Edward's parents which is why i'm looking for the marriage cert.

Thanks.

I have found an Edward Coates pre marriage (a groom if I remember rightly) but as I can not prove it is definitely him, it is in my 'possibly box'

I looked at Henry Coates married to Mary Ann Jefferson but they appear together in the 1881 census at a different location so I know it can't be them.

Thanks.

Hi Gremlee

Welcome to rootschat  :)

Rosie

Hi,

No I don't unfortunately.  The first I have them is in 1878 at 43 Rider Street, Leeds, Yorkshire, England.  This is from their eldest son's birth cert.  They had three children in all (John Thomas, Ernest and Jane Ann - still born)  They moved from Leeds to Leicester to Gorton, Manchester.  I can find a lot of info for them in Gorton but next to nothing in Leeds which is my sticking point at the moment.

Many thanks and regards,
Lee
