1874 Marriage certificate of James Hayward and Elizabeth Jane Richards
« on: Tuesday 24 February 15 18:53 GMT (UK) »
I have found the marriage banns of James Hayward and Elizabeth Jane Richards on FindMyPast . The banns were read in Oct 1874  at Ystrdyfodwg, and in the margin it says that the marriage took place on 9th Nov 1874.
Is it possible that the actual marriage certificate could be online as well because I am interested in who were the witnesses. Some of the Cornwall marriage certificates are on Familysearch and I was hoping that Welsh ones could be online somewhere as well.
James was born in Somerset and Elizabeth Jane was born in Cornwall. I have traced them from 1881-1911 and in 1911 they are living with 6 of their children and two grandchildren in Rhondda.

FindMyPast has marriage images for November 1874 Ystrdyfodwg but there is no marriage on the 9th.

The banns actually say 'To be married Nov 9'  - maybe they didn't go through with it.

Is it on the GRO index, I am not seeing it there.

The banns image says 'to be married 9 Nov.' so looks like they didn't do it after the banns were read.   If you check GRO index there is no marriage between them listed for Dec.qtr.1874.

I agree with you Annette. I wonder if they married in a registry office.
At the moment I can't find a marriage in the BMD's either.
In the 1911 census it states that they had been married for 37 years and have had 12 children. Eight still alive and three had died.

Even if they had married in a registry office it would still be listed in the GRO marriage index!

Think you have to accept that for whatever reason, even though the banns were read, they did not go through with the actual marriage.

It happened - a family I was once working on had a couple who had the banns read twice (some 5/6 years apart) and still did not actually go through with the ceremony.

I know that it would still be in the GRO marriage index and like you I am unable to find it.
Will have to leave this on the back boiler for the time.
