Beerburn in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, looking for cottage or place
« on: Tuesday 24 February 15 21:13 GMT (UK) »
I have a record of a James Bell born 7 July 1842 in Hutton, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, who died 1 Apr 1900 in Beerburn, the parish of Hutton, the county of Dumfriesshire. Son was George Bell who lived at 96.9 Scott street Annan. Have been to the area and looked for such a place, had the help of a historian from Ecclefechan but could not come up with a place. Found a place called Bear Burn on an old ScotlandPlaces map but it was just a burn, not a cottage. Cannot find the map online again.
If anyone can help please let me know. Thanks.

Hi BerylSarah

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

From the 1901 census transcript, there is a reference to Beerburn in Hutton. This family show as living there:

Thomas Faulds 29 Dry Stone Waller
Elizabeth Jane Faulds 28
Elizabeth Jane Faulds 3
Jessie Faulds 1

Sometimes, for these later years, what people can do is to look at the original image on Scotlands People (pay to view) and get clues of surrounding place names to then try to map the location. For much earlier censuses, around 1841-61, you can use FreeCen or Maxwell Ancestry which can let you search surround addresses on their sites.

James Bell and his children show as living at Beerburn, Hutton in 1891. Again, the original image for the census on Scotlands People could give you clues as to location.

The National Library of Scotland maps website will give you free access to old maps of Scotland. If you click on "Series maps", you will get access to very large scale Ordnance Survey maps of the period.

Now found Beerburn in 1851 here www.maxwellancestry.com/census/51transcript.aspx?houseid=83104006

You can look at previous/next household there (like FreeCen).

It was sometimes spelled Bearburn.

In the 1851 it is between Birsca and Paddockhole which is the bottom right of the Parish.

Btw...it looks like James lived there his entire life, well at least from the 1851.
