William Gowlett Baynes
« on: Wednesday 25 February 15 17:52 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have any information on the birth/baptism and parents of William Gowlett Baynes born about 1875?
There are some 18 family trees on Ancestry , only 2 have named  his parents, but they are not in agreement.

I have found details of his marriage, his wife, the wonderfully named Enough,  and his children and a fair bit about his life. He was a reasonably important citizen of Essex, but there doesn't seem to be anything definite on his parents etc.

There is a William Gowlett Baynes dying in 1847 in Stepney - worth putting on the back burner in case he turns out to be linked!

Cant see a birth reg for your guy though.

Who does he name as his father on his marriage? When/where does he marry?
What censuses have you found him in? Where does he say he was born?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex

Eric

Is this date right - there is information from Google that gives the date as October 2, 1785?

Thanks for the replies.

Sorry!!!!!! the birth date should have been 1785. I must have got my fingers in a twist!!!!!!
Yes he did die in 1847 in Stepney, so he is only on the 1841 census. His wife also died in 1847.

His wife's maiden name was Enough Nottage, daughter of Thomas and Maria Nottage.

Family Search, in addition to the address on the reply also has children with the same Christian names and with the Baynes surname!!!!!!

He was William Gowlett Baynes and at one time was a Bailiff for Essex.

thanks again

Eric

There is an entry for a William Gowlett Baynes in St. Laurence Church, Ridgewell, Essex Parish Register - Baptisms 1785.  Birth is stated as 10 February, 1785 and baptism is 26 June, 1785.  He is the son of George and Hannah Baynes.  Both parents died in Goldhanger, Essex.  There are also other
children baptised in the register.
Best wishes
Margaret

Hello Margaret
That's great, thank you.

William Gowlett Baynes's first child was baptised William Rayner Baynes, and I guessed that the Rayner bit was probably the mother's maiden name. I had found a marriage between George Baynes and Hannah Rayner in Halstead at the right time, but couldn't find any births or baptisms

I see the Ridgewell registers are available on line for a small fee, so I can follow that up if I need to.

Do you have any connection to the Baynes family?

Many thanks again

Eric
