Confused by William Bullens
« on: Thursday 26 February 15 14:45 GMT (UK) »
I would be very grateful if anyone could shed any light on my problem, or perhaps suggest a course of action to solve it.
My ancestor William Bullen appears in the 1841 census in Albury with his family, aged 30 making him born around 1811. I have been trying to find more information about him, a record of his birth or baptism and death or burial. Unfortunately, I have found two possible Surrey births for William Bullen and two deaths

Baptisms:
25th March 1810 in Pirbright
4th July 1813 in Pirbright

Burials:
1846 in Albury (birth year 1809)
1846 in Guildford (birth year 1811)

Thank you for any assistance.

Steve ???

Hi

As to death, William's widow Emily and children are still in Albury in 1851 so you may think the Albury burial most likely.  Have you got a precise date for that burial?  If so you may be able to tie it into the date of death if you can obtain the correct death certificate - which with any luck will show Emily as the informant.

FreeBMD shows the two William Bullen deaths in Guildford district (covering also Albury) in Jun qtr 1846 and Dec qtr 1846 respectively.

One is still around

William Bullen with wife Maria is in 1851 born c1810 Pirbright
1861 born c1811 Pirbright
1871 born c1809 Pirbright
1881 born c1809 Pirbright

That might rule out the 1810 baptism and rules out both burials as this one is still alive.

Yours could be older than 30 in 1841 if his age was rounded down - when was first child born?

The trouble with the baptisms is that one doesn't know how old the children were at baptism - unless the register says so.

Is the relevant marriage that of William Bullen to Emma Jelley, 24 July 1831 Wonersh?

(I see that William's wife was Emily in the censuses but Emma when they had Henry baptised in 1833).

If that is the marriage, the witnesses were Henry Bullen & Eliza Cooper.

I wonder is there a baptism for the youngest child?

There could be a note father deceased if the events occurred close to each other.

Youngest one is Emma 5 in 1851.

Hi, thanks for the replies.

My William was married to Emily as you say avm228, and had children from between 1832 and 1845. Emily remarried in 1852, so that would support a death date of around 1846. I don't have a date, but there is a national burial index entry for a burial in Albury in 1846. To me this seems most likely. I can now see both deaths in free BMD. I guess I'll have to order both certificates.

Milliepede, I think you have found a different William, as mine was married to Emily.

Thanks again both for your input.

She (Emma) was baptised 12 May 1845 - can't see register but Dad would have been alive still as both possible death registrations were in 1846.

An online tree has his death as 6 June 1846 Albury.

Going off track but looks like Emily marries the visitor from 1851 on 17 Apr 1852 - Richard Freelove.
