How/Where to access Norwich Assize records?
« on: Thursday 26 February 15 16:26 GMT (UK) »
I can find "sniffs" of these being held by the National Archive, and (physically) being held at the Norwich Record Office.

But I am totally in the dark as to how I would go about find the right stuff and accessing it.

I would like to read the court report of the attempted murder of Eliza Hunt by Richard Roberts.

This hearing was  held in the Spring Assizes, 1863, Crown Court before Mr Justice Williams.

The Criminal Register on Ance*ry gives me 28th March 1863

"Richard Roberts" "Feloniously wounding to murder" 5 years penal servitude

An ancestor was (probably) involved, but is only ever referred to in the newspaper reports by her surname. I'm hoping the full record will give more detail.

Bugbear,
TNA appears to hold the records you want but you have to order a copy, after first requesting a quote (see https://apps.nationalarchives.gov.uk/recordcopying/estimateitems.aspx?requestthis=ASSI%2033/15&linkback=http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C3681358 )

The document in question is a goal book which will give; names of the accused, charges against the accused, plea, verdict, sentence.
The description is:
Reference:   ASSI 33/15
Date:    1852 Summer-1863 Lent
Held by:    The National Archives, Kew
Legal status:    Public Record
Context of this record
ASSI 33 - Assizes: Norfolk Circuit: Gaol Books
ASSI 33/15 - This record has no title

That's excellent information - thank you -  but it sounds as if this book would add little to what I already know;

the attempted murder is widely reported (in some gory detail  :) ) in the newspapers of the time.

And I just paid a whole quid for a month's access to the BNA.  ;)

I was hoping for a transcript of the court session, to give me more detail than the court reports in the papers, but it appears such a thing does not exist.

Trial records consist of a variety of documents but rarely are there any that contain transcripts of evidence or details of the age of the accused.
