William Marshall tried for murder
« on: Saturday 28 February 15 09:28 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help with this query as I keep drawing a blank.
I know that William was aged 60 and tried for murder around 1880, in Kirkcowan or Wigtown however I am unable to find any other information as to whether this is true. I would appreciate of anyone can point me in the right direction. Thanks

It was in Kirkinner in 1896.

On 18 December 1896 in Edinburgh High Court, William Marshall aged 60 was tried for the murder of Andrew Wright in Kirkinner on 10 October. Culpable homicide, 10 years penal servitude.

Thank you Shaun J
Would you be able to suggest where I could find this information
online or would I need to wait to visit Edinburgh Archives?

Contemporary newspaper reports.  British Newspaper Database or FindMyPast or the Gale/BL 19th century newspapers (to which many libraries provide free online access).

The Glasgow Herald is free to view on Google Newspapers - http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=GGgVawPscysC&hl=en

Found a report on a similar murder case tried at Edinburgh High Court around the same time for a friend recently using this facility.

Good luck with your research,
Looby :)

A fascinating topic Auchencrieff. Is he one of yours and mine? ;) That was quite a lenient sentence.

Where was he residing on the 1901 census? Presumably he died in prison?

Firstly can I thank everyone for their help with this topic. I agree that the sentence appears to be light. I wonder how Andrew's widow and child/ children managed to cope. Probably the small community helped. It seems that William's mother was still alive as the article refers to her house. She must have found life in a small community very difficult. Now I need to find William in the 1891 and 1901 census and also find his death, wherever that may be to determine whether or not he belongs in my family tree.
Lots of work still to do. Thanks again everyone.
