MURDY. Northumberland 1700+
« on: Monday 02 March 15 02:26 GMT (UK) »
Have searched all 15 pages and not found any names listed there that I am researching, so here goes!
The earliests MURDY I have is     HENRY supposedly of the parish of WARKWORTH. around 1730's
Fathered a child( Mary ) at Woodhorn  1739.
Gravitated north to NORHAM where sons ROBERT, HENRY and EDWARD (1755) where born also dau. Diana
My line, EDWARD married an ELIZABETH MORTON, possibly from BELFORD.
Anyone else interested in this surname????--- no I thought as much--- as rare as hens teeth we are!

Not so rare. I have both Morton and Murdie (not spelled as Murdy) in my tree, but neither are in my direct line so I have not spent much time on looking at them. Can you tell us more about what you are trying to follow up, then maybe someone can help you.

I agree the Morton is not so rare, but have you found anyone else researching MURDY?( only ever  with this spelling)
As a direct research I think you will struggle.

My brick wall is   HENRY  supposed to be of the parish of Warkworth. Born late 1600's early 1700.
I haven't found a marriage for him but his children  are born in Norham ( apart from the illegitimate one in Woodhorn)
He dies in 1761 in Norham.

Can you tell us what you know about Henryīs eldest child as that may help to give a rough timeframe for the marriage. Do any of the baptisms for the children give an indication of the motherīs name?

Forgot to say, I shouldnīt put too much weight on the spelling when you are that far back. Whether it ends in y or ie would be pretty much dependent on the individual writing the register rather than on whether the family were able to spell their own name.

No ---no indication of the mother's name. Eldest found so far would be the daughter DIANA born 1739 Norham

That is not a particularly common Christian name around that area at that time. If we donīt make progress in a more conventional way, then I would also look for other instances of Diana in Norham or Warkworth in the late 1600s or early 1700s. That might give some clues as to who mother or granny may have been.

Hi BigOoms

Just read your Murdie post - I too am researching this family in the 18c.
Sarah Murdie is my 5xGtGrandmother, I believe her brother could be Anthony. Sarah married William Ballinton (or variant) 22/5/1785 at Eglingham, her brother Anthony possibly married in Howick. If they are brother and sister then father is Thomas. Any connection?
