Where did the Buckland Elthams come from?
« on: Monday 02 March 15 09:57 GMT (UK) »
Henry Eltham and his wife Elizabeth baptised 7 children in Buckland, Berkshire between 1723/4 and 1742.
John Eltham and his wife Mary also baptised 7 children in Buckland between 1726 and 1748.

As both sets of parents had their children over a long period, I would assume that they married in their twenties and would therefore expect births for Henry and John around 1700.
Baptisms on Familysearch for Buckland only go back to 1691, but no sign of Henry and John baptised around the turn of the century, no marriages for them either.

As it is not a common surname, I have speculated they are brothers, Henry being the older and they have come  from a village / town not too far away.

Can anyone find any likely candidates for the two in baptisms for nearby places or their marriages which I guess would be a year or so before birth of first child.

John and Mary's children were
Lucy, John, Edward, Mary, Ann, James, Elizabeth

and Henry and Elizabeth's children were
James, Henry, Elizabeth, Thomas, Anthony, Sarah, Mary.

In case any clues there about parent's names.

I have marriages in the 1750's for Mary (John's daughter the other one is too young), Ann, Sarah, John and Thomas so I know they survived to adulthood.
I have found 5 burials in Buckland, Henry (1780), Elizabeth (1781), John (1796), Mary (1770) and Ruth (1785). If the burials are the four parents, they will have live to quite great ages, so I suspect some might be the children with the same names or their spouses. (Thomas married a Mary)

Hi LizzieL,

I see you haven’t had any replies - yet.

Have you considered or looked into the Parish of Bampton next to Buckland for the Eltham’s clan?

They have considerable numbers of baptisms, and burials but only a few marriages.

Would these baptisms help?:
29-12-1695 John ELTON s/o Robert
13-2-1695 James     “         “  Henery
13-3-1697 Henery   “         “       “

Just a few variations in Bampton  to consider;
Elton,Eltham.Eltom,Eltoum,Eltum,Eltam,Elthome

Thank you both for your replies.
I had looked at the Bampton Elthams (and variants) but was wary of jumping to conclusions about the connection, all the the first names are so common unfortunately. Anthony seems to be the least common name of the Buckland baptised children and I have found an older Anthony in Bampton, so possibly a connection and he was named after an uncle or great uncle.

I think the Upton family are connected to the group which are definitely my direct ancestors from Steventon. I also think the Steventon ones came from Bampton, but again it is only through a common forname and a feasible baptism date. My family don't seem to have gone in for will writing, or none that I've found, so no clues there.
