Peterhead Prison

I am trying to establish if an inmate of  Peterhead Prison, sent in 1896 and who appears on the 1901 census is an ancestor.
I have been unable to find his death record. He did not  return to his home in Kirkinner, Wigtownshire. Any suggestions as to what could have happened after 1901 would be appreciated.
He was called William Marshall, Born Kirkinner around 1839, Sentenced to 10 years penal servitude at Edinburgh in 1896, when he was about 60 years old.

I presume he doesn't appear on the 1911 census - is that correct?

Correct I haven't found him on the 1911 census

I did check this Wiliam, however, I have no proof that he is the correct person. Also he had a child born in 1897, whose both record I need to check to see if he was the informant.

Bit confused.  Which William Marshall had a child born in 1897 - the one who died in 1911 or the one who went to prison in 1896?

I think you need to tell us the full background here. 

The first port of call would be the child's birth cert to establish mothers name and maiden name and that will also give you fathers occupation

Downloading a copy of the parents marriage cert will give you Williams age and parents which will help you decide if there is any connection to you
