I've seen this before when the parents weren't married. As far as I'm aware, the "primary" certificate was issued in the mother's name, but a second certificate could be issued at the same time to acknowledge the father as long as he had attended the register office and accepted paternity. But he had to be there! So no, it wouldn't have been two separate visits.

Looking at the two marriages mentioned: The first, in 1930, to Doris Harvey, seems to have produced 1 child.

I wonder if this was your Lewis who then didn't marry Ms Gaylor as he was already married.

The second marriage in 1951 is followed by 4 births in 4 years, the oldest child sharing the same name as one of the Gaylor children.

I can't see a death for Doris Rymer prior to either of these marriages.

However death certificate gives place of birth as Republic of Ireland and merchant seaman record gives it as Liverpool.

I don't know what dob you have from anywhere but the only possible matches on freeBMD for births in the wider Liverpool area are these:

Births Jun 1892
Rimmer    Lewis        Ormskirk    8b   800

Births Mar 1895
Rimmer    Lewis         Toxteth Park    8b   174
  (died same year)

Births Dec 1896
Rimmer    Lewis         Toxteth Park    8b   153

is it worth tracking these?  --- Probably not, although they are both visible in the subsequent censuses, there's no Francis or Patrick as father.

That's interesting that he physically went to the office to confirm paternity. In fact it's very useful - I was starting to wonder if the name had been conjoured out of thin air!

Another point worth noting is that the 1930 marriage cert is for 7 March - however the birth of the child in that relationship is the JAS quarter. I would hazard a guess that it was a marriage of convenience!

I do know that Lewis was definitely around in 1944 when his son last remembers him.

Time to throw in the extra bits of info - in 1944 he was in the Pioneer Corps (wartime).

There was also a story in the family that he served in the Irish Constabulary, the 'Black & Tans'.

If the roots are indeed in Ireland this could explain some of my difficulty tracing them, but the name Rymer and it's variations seems to be so uncommon there that they should be easy enough to find, and they're not.

That would definitely cancel that one out as being too early, the 1982 would could be a possibility though?

Parents names on that one were Thomas Rimmer and Margery Formby.
