Family Diamond/Humphryies (1880 -1900)
« on: Tuesday 03 March 15 09:55 GMT (UK) »
Greetings,

I am interested in finding more information of living family.  I know that my great grandfather Aaron Barnett Diamond was naturalised in Ireland in the 1800's he married a lady Julia Humphyries. They had several children my grandfather was William Henry born 26.01.1888.  Aaron travelled to Africa to fight in the Boer war and when it ended in 1902 he decided to remain in Africa his family joined him, (here my information is sketchy as I do not know if they all came to Africa or not).  Aaron was the first person to build a synagogue in the city of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and then in Elizabethville in the Congo having found the first tsetse fee route to travel from Northern Rhodesian to Congo.

I will be visiting Ireland shortly and would like to see some of this history or even the places they lived, William was born in Barrack Street.

If anyone can help I would be very grateful.

Thanks

P.

They married in the civil district DUBLIN SOUTH in 1885
Aaron Barnett DIAMOND and Julia JACOB HUMPHREYS
The reference is Q1 Jan-Mar Volume 2 Page 621

This certificate would let you see their Father's names to help locate extended family

Is this the family in 1901 in Dublin?
Kearney & Bourke/ Johns & Fox/ Mannion & Finan/ Donohoe & Curley
Byrne [Carthy], Keeffe/ Germaine, Butler/ McDermott, Giblin/ Lally, Dolan
Toole, Doran; Dowling, Grogan/ Reilly, Burke; Warren, Kidd [Lawless]/ Smith, Scally; Mangan, Rodgers/ Fahy, Calday; Staunton, Miller

To look at Julia HUMPHRIES family you would have to find out her father’s name at least to prove connections
Although she states on the census returns she was born in Dublin
I don't see an obvious match for her

editted to add forgotten link oops!
This link may be of help sourcing Jewish connections in Ireland

To look at William Henry’s siblings you can follow some of them on line

DIAMOND Family births
1886 Leah Mary (Civil Reference 1886 Kilkenny Q1 V3 P446)
1887 Anna (Civil Reference 1887 Kilkenny Q1 V3 P425)
? according to online tree m. Nicholas ROSENFELD
1888 William Henry (Civil Reference 1888 Kilkenny Q1 V2 P429)
1890 Susanna (Civil Reference 1890 Kilkenny Q3 V3 P387)
   1934 m. Clifford B. MONDAY (UK Civil Reference Hastings Sussex Q3 V2b P103)
1894 Miriam Rebecca (Civil Reference 1895 Dublin South Q4 V2 P592)
1898 Victor Soloman (Civil Reference 1898 Waterford Q3 V4 P642)
(There was a 7th child that died according to the 1911 census)

1901 Census
Julia DIAMOND is listed at Raymond Street, Dublin with 6 children – see above

1911 Census
Julia DIAMOND was listed in the UK at 26 Narford Road, Clapton, London
with Leah (25), Susie (21), Mollie (17) and Victor (13) – all single
She was described as married 26 years and having had seven children of which six were alive

Anna DIAMOND aged 24 was listed at 14 Lordship Road, Stoke Newington, London as an adopted sister to Nancy (26), Clara (24), Amy (16) and Olive (9) BENNING. She was an embroiderer.

I don’t see William Henry/Harry but he is shown in British Army records in 1909 when he spent 207 days in the 1st Heavy Battery of the 1st London Royal Guards
His address is the same as that his mother and siblings are living at in 1911
His regimental number was 463 and former occupation a wood carver

With the SA connection, a Harry DIAMOND of the correct age died in Johannesburg in 1962 and buried in the same graveyard is a Victor DIAMOND who died in 1967.

There are a few deaths that could match Julia DIAMOND in the UK and there are several marriages between 1911 and 1930 in the London area that could be that of the sisters and would require checking – the family seems to have remained in the UK or moved to SA rather than returning to Ireland.

Best of luck searching and enjoy your trip!

This is the only Humphrey (using Hump* to search) in Ireland listed as a Jew on the 1901 Census at 325 in Park Avenue (Part of) (Pembroke East & Donnybrook, Dublin)
Lewis Jacob HUMPHREYS and his wife Bridget (nee Walshe) and daughter Leah Maude

Lewis and Bridget are on the 1911 census at 36.1 in Belgrave Road (Rathmines & Rathgar East, Dublin)

He may be connected to Julia and if so this previous forum topic may be of use

Also Leah Maude married in Dublin South 1924 Q4 V2 P326
Kearney & Bourke/ Johns & Fox/ Mannion & Finan/ Donohoe & Curley
Byrne [Carthy], Keeffe/ Germaine, Butler/ McDermott, Giblin/ Lally, Dolan
