Andrew Thomas Scott
« on: Tuesday 03 March 15 14:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Can anybody help locate this person on the 1861 census?

He was born in Berwickshire (Berwick-on-Tweed), however his year of birth is unclear:
1881 census finds him in Lamesley, Chester-Le-Street as a 'boarder'. He is calling himself Thomas Scott and his year of birth is 1853.
He married in Sunderland in 1889 to Margaret Thompson and the 1891 census finds them in 14 1/2 King Street - name and year of birth given as Thomas Scott - 1862.

Margaret gave birth to their son, Andrew Thomas, two days later at the same address. She named her husband as 'Andrew Thomas Scott'.

The 1901 census finds him listed as Andrew Thomas Scott born around 1855 and he died in Sunderland during the June quarter of 1909 as Thomas Scott aged 55 years (year of birth - 1854).

Can anybody trace him in 1861? Or a birth/baptism?

Thanks

Sue

Hi All,

I have received Thomas Scott and Margaret Thompson's marriage certificate:

They married in Sunderland on the 29th June 1889; Thomas gives his age as 27 years, plainly untrue, and gives his father's name as Andrew Scott, a horse keeper.
He was living in 1 Cecil Street, Sunderland and employed as a cart man.

Can anybody trace him with his father?

Thanks

Sue

At the moment I can't see him pre 1881,  but I did find a baptism of  Andrew Thomas Scott on 23 March  1856 at Berwick-upon-Tweed with  parents Andrew  and Elizabeth Scott https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J9V9-Q6Y

There was also a baptism of a William Inglis Scott on 22 Aug 1858 - Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland with parents Andrew and Elizabeth Scott.  William was possibly a boarder in 1881 in Gateshead in 1881 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X3R7-849

Still looking for them post baptism

Possibly Andrew in 1861 - Living with his grandmother at Walkergate Lane, Berwick upon Tweed with the same surname as his brother's middle name

Jesse Ingles Head Widow 63 Green Grocer Scotland
Andrew I Scott Grandson    5 Berwick on Tweed, (transcribed on Anc as Anetran E Scott)
Margart Knox 15 Pauper    Berwick on Tweed,
Mary Wilson    Lodger    61 Sick Nurse    Berwick on Tweed
RG 9 Piece 3886 Folio 49 Page 6

And possibly Andrew and Elizabeth with younger son William in 1861 living in Felling, Heworth Durham -All listed as born Scotland although in 1861 Andrew was a chemical labourer

Andrew Scott 33
Elizabeth Scott 30
William Scott 2

In 1841 this looks like the grandmother Jesse with a daughter Elizabeth - living at Kiln Hill Tweedmouth all born Scotland

William Ingles 30
Jessey Ingles 40
Elizabeth Ingles    12
Mary Ingles 9
Catherine Ingles 7
Jessey Ingles    5
Jemima Ingles    1
HO107 Piece 318 Book 9 Folio 29 Page 16

Kay

Edit - If this is the right family by 1871 Elizabeth was widowed and the family all living in Gateshead

Elizabeth Scott    38 b Scotland
Andrew J Scott    15 b Scotland Labourer in Iron Works
William Scott 11b Scotland
Patrick Butterly    28 Boarder
Henry Wall 50 Lodger
Robert Norris 26 Lodger

Elizabeth and William are together in Gateshead in 1891 with William listed as born Berwick on Tweed

Wow! Thanks for that!

I thought I had found Andrew Thomas (or just 'Thomas') with his mother and brother in Gateshead in 1871, with a lodger, Patrick Butterly.
The 1881 census shows Elizabeth now married to Patrick (surname spelt Butterley), and still living in Gateshead, with Andrew Thomas' brother, William Scott, aged 22 years.
Andrew Thomas can be found in 1881 living in Chester-Le-Street as Thomas Scott born in Berwick upon Tweed c1853.

The frustrating thing about Andrew Thomas is that he seems to prefer the name Thomas, so you are never quite sure whether you are looking at the right person prior to his marriage!

Yes - and the parents Andrew and Elizabeth don't seem to have married in England or Scotland  :-\

Kay

Edit -Interesting that in the 1881 census Elizabeth says she was born in Roxborough
