Richards of Tenby Pembrokeshire Wales
« on: Wednesday 04 March 15 01:26 GMT (UK) »
Ann Richards was born 31 July 1805 in Tenby, Pembrokeshire Wales. She married George Lawrence in Saint Marylebone, London on 5 March 1829 and settled in Dover, Kent (died 1895).

I believe her father was Richard Jenkins Richard or just Jenkin Richards, or Richard Jenkins (but why would they have a different surname!!); mother Elizabeth

Ann had the following sisters:
Hester b. Tenby 1796-d. 1885 Somerset spinster; Sarah born Tenby 1802, married John Carter, died between 1871-83; Hannah, born Tenby 1804

There are 3 other persons born to Richard Jenkin Richard & Elizabeth: Margaret (1790), Jane (1806), Thomas (1796). Not born in Tenby....Are these people siblings of Ann Richards??

Did Richard Jenkin Richards/or Jenkin Richards/Jenkin Richard marry Elizabeth in or nearby Tenby? When? Would be nice to find out what Richard's profession was...There is a 1851 Census Return for Richard, Elizabeth and Margaret, but are they my Richard and Elizabeth??

I'd welcome any help breaking down this brick wall...

The reason is because of the Welsh Patronymic naming system.

On FreeREG;
ELIZABETH Richards, Baptised 16 Jan 1803, Tenby Parish Church
Parents RICHARD/ELIZABETH
Notes; Patronymic; Father's name is Richard JENKIN

Others Father Richard Jenkin/Jenkins
RICHARD 19 Jan 1800
HANNAH Dec 1804*** (you quoted)
THOMAS, 23 Sept 1811

I am not a expert on Wales so someone else may be able to help you more.

Trish :)

Thank you Trish

That's really helpful. That makes a lot of sense. Found marriage for Elizabeth Griffiths and Richard Jenkins. So I am looking for 'Richards', but also 'Jenkins' plus other names still tbc.

this post has various links explaining the patronymic naming system.

The register, which is available online, shows her father as Richard Jinkens, cordwinder

Hi Osprey

I'm following up on the previous posts....I'm back on the trail of Richard Jenkin of Tenby. I tried all the links, but wasn't able to find an index with the specific info as quoted by you on Richard Jenkin. I'm hoping you might be able to add the link to the index source into this post.

Many thanks

the link explains the use of patronymics, it's not specifically about your Richard.

this is the baptism
