Charles William Squires
« on: Wednesday 04 March 15 12:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help me out here.  My GGF Charles William Squires was born in West Derby in July 1875.  In 1896 he married Florence Leighton in West Derby and in 1903 he married again to Frances Maud Williams in Liverpool.

At some point in 1903 he moved to Abertillery where my GF Herbert Stanley Squires was born in 1903 and in 1911 census he is shown living in Barry. But, while I am curious as to why he moved south (he wasn't in industry, but there are other Squires in the Abertillery area) I want to know what happened to him after 1911 as I am unable to find a death registered.

Also, family lore says that he had been a soldier and that his Florence Maud's family were not impressed by the union, but I can find nothing to back that up. By 1903-1911 he was a painter and decorator.

Any assistance much appreciated as he is causing me to pull out what little remains of my hair!

Have you found a death for his wife?

If she was a widow at the time it might narrow the time frame for his death a little.

There is a war death for a Charles William Squires 13 May 1915 and it does say widow Florence - or was Florence his first wife?  If so might not be your man  :-\

However the lore that yours had been a soldier means he may have died in WW1  :(

I haven't seen her death cert but I'm told his 2nd wife Frances, died in Liverpool in 1944. Unfortunately my GF didn't get on with his father and never talked much. His army service and the fact that his 2nd wife's family disowned her was all he ever said. I might get more on that story if I can track her family, but that's another story

It may also be worth looking for deaths as William rather than Charles/Charles William, as the 1911 free index suggests that that is how he appears in the Barry entry you have found.

Yes, I tried William.  There are several candidates for both Charles William and William, but all far from home.
