William Hardy b1847 Norfolk, Ann Marlow b1850 Ashby-de-la-Zouch
« on: Wednesday 04 March 15 21:32 GMT (UK) »
The Hardy's are now in Leicestershire,  William married Ann in 1872 - freeBMD 7a,141.  They had 10 children - 5 boys and 5 girls.

The boys:

William Hardy b1872,  m  Agnes Tapp 1901 they have 3 children.
Harry Hardy b1883,  m   Hannah E Watson  1920 one child found, Berlinda A Hardy b1924 7a,173
George Hardy b1885,  m  Bertha Watson 1909 no children found.
James Hardy b1887,  m  Elizabeth Sutton 1910  one child found, James Hardy b1928  7a,172
John Thomas Hardyb1893,  m  Ruth Broadhurst 1918  three children found, Doreen R Hardy b1923  7a,183.  Mavis Hardy b1927  7a,151.  Jean A Hardy b1929  7a,151.
All Ashby-de-la-Zouch.

I am looking for children born to the above 1911 - 1916.  A search reveals many births in the Ashby area but it seems impossible to tie them to the above Hardy's - there must be a way? without having to purchase 100's of certificates!

Help please.

Mike.

Thank you Annie65115 and Isobelruss,  I have a query using freeBMD - Far example I know William Hardy and Agnes Tapp had three children from the 1911 census record RG14, 19082.

Using freeBMD gives the children's names, birth date and location but there is no indication as to the correct mother!! So without census info covering 1911  -1916 how can you tie the children's names to the right parents?  True, I am a novice but this is confusing, please enlighten.

Mike.

The mother's maiden names aren't recorded before 1911 so in the best way I can think of checking for free is simply to match up the results from your freeBMD search with the 1911 censuses. That usually (not always) always you to narrow down the 1901 - 1911 freeBMD hits reasonably successfully.

Once you've done that you can, of course, work backwards, find the appropriate marriage (since you'll know from 1911 the bride's first name and year of marriage) then work forwards again from 1911 to search the births with mother's maiden name as an extra search parameter.

I hope that makes sense -- seems easy to do but a little more difficult to explain!

Nickthornber -- Rootschat doesn't allow private emails etc in messages, to avoid spam. If you makke two more postings anywhere on Rootschat you;ll then be able to use the private message system,

Here's an opportunity for one of those postings -- when did your grandmother work at Rowbothams? My gran did as well and I have a picture of the typing pool and another of a works outing with various other unknown staff in both pics. (perhaps it was me to whom you were directing that question in the first place?)

Thank you Annie65115,  I have two other queries:

Henry Hardy and George Hardy (both brothers) married Hannah Watson and Bertha Watson ( both related)  FreeBMD give two children for 'Watson' how do I assign them?

Free BMD give two children ( John, 7a,142. Gloria,7a 126) born to John T Hardy and Ruth Broadhurst  in March and June 1919 - Strange!!  Is this possible?

Mike.

The only way to be certain of the parentage would be to get the birth certificates.

However, looking at dates we can make an educated guess:

George and Bertha married in 1909. They had no children by the time of the 1911 census.
From 1911 onwards, freeBMD gives us the mother's maiden name in birth registrations; and there are no Hardy/Watson births in the Ashby reg district until 1921 and 1923.

Harry Hardy and Hannah Watson married in 1920.

So the balance of probabilities is that the two births in the early 20s were to Harry and Hannah - but you would need to see documentary evidence of this if you wanted to be sure.
