Help needed to find a marriage in the Cheadle area, late 1770's!
« on: Thursday 05 March 15 19:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I am having great trouble finding a marriage between my 5x gt grandparents James Bancroft (1749-1826) & Jane his wife (1757-59-1818/19).

James Bancroft was baptised on 19th Feb 1749 at St Mary's church, Cheadle to parents Joshua & Elizabeth Bancroft.

James & Jane's first child was Elizabeth Bancroft (1780-1852) (my 4x gt grandmother) baptised on 26th March 1780 at St Mary's church, Cheadle. James & Jane had 5 more children that I know of between 1782-95.

James Bancroft died in 1826 in Stretford, Manchester, Lancashire but was buried back at St Mary's church, Cheadle on 3rd Nov 1826.

I have been unable to find a marriage for James & Jane (which I would think would have taken place in the late 1770's) anywhere, this includes looking on sites such as FindMyPast, Familysearch & the Cheshire Parish Register Project website etc, with no luck whatsoever, can anyone help?

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David

Hi CB53,

Many, many thanks indeed for your speedy reply, very much appreciated indeed.

I think that you may well have hit the proverbial nail on the head as it were. Having taken a quick look at an atlas, I can see that Cheadle & Northenden are approx 3 miles or thereabouts apart. Also my James Bancroft was of Cheadle.

My thanks to you again.

Kind regards

David

Perhaps the witnesses to the marriage....
John Davenport and Peter Lamb will mean something to you?

Hi Rolnora,

Many thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

Unfortunately the two names (John Davenport & Peter Lamb) mean absolutely nothing to me, however, I shall make a note of them just in case.

Was there any other info on the marriage record?

Thanks again.

Kind regards

David

Hi Carolli,

Many thanks indeed for your reply, very much appreciated.

Hmmm, there could be a connection, as your James & Mary are having children in the same kind of time frame as Joshua & Elizabeth Bancroft (Nee Adshead). Joshua & Elizabeth being the parents of my James Bancroft. Joshua & Elizabeth were having children (7) between 1749 & 1768.

Perhaps my Joshua (born c1725) & your James were brothers? I haven't been able to find a birth/baptism for Joshua as yet!

Joshua & my James were both Tailors (or Taylor on the baptism records!) by trade.

If I come up with anything I'll let you know!

Kind regards

David

Hi David,
There isn't anything else apart from the fact that James signed his name and Jane made her mark.

The will of Joshua Bancroft dated 1804 may have some clues
