Blackhill Cememtery
« on: Friday 06 March 15 14:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I have four ancestors buried at Blackhill Cemetery and I was hoping someone would be able to help me out with getting information from the records. Their names were: John Davison Watson, died on the 1st May 1919, age 44. He was husband of Margaret Windley Watson, who died on the 9th May 1920, age 43. She had a baby who was named after her but the child died aged 3 in Oct-Nov-Dec 1923. And then John's mother called Margaret Watson died in 1922. She was 89 years old. If you have any information relating to these people would you be able to send it to me? It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
emfranky.

In Horton, Northumberland: Davison, Beecroft (previously from Houghton-le-Spring).
In Sunderland, Durham: Hunter, Watson (also of Wallsend, Northumberland; Blackhill, Durham)

You'll find the Burial Records for the four Watsons you mentioned in the attached PDF. There are quite a few Watsons buried in Blackhill Cemetery - I've included them all since you may find other family members among them.

Thanks pb3, that's really helpful :) Is there any way of finding out if there were deaths at 9 Railway Terrace in the early 1900's?

Attached is a PDF showing the deaths recorded in Blackhill Cemetery of people whose address is shown as Railway Terrace. I've done a spread of house numbers from 6 to 12. I don't know how big Railway Terrace was since I couldn't find it on a contemporary map. Good luck with your research.

Thanks again for all the help,
emfranky.

hi,
Have been in contact with someone who lived in that area over 40 yrs ago.

Railway terrace area has been re-developed, however, Derwent street the street it was adjacent to is still there.
the main road through Blackhill is Durham road, going downhill past the cemetery , Derwent street is on the left.

I have been told that the Pimpernel placemat factory was a short way up Derwent st in the former Co-op buildings.

Railway terrace was to the side of this building.

Literally gone round the houses to get there ;D

hope this is a useful pointer but Stan is the man who usually finds places for us :)

cheers
taffie

Railway Terrace was next to Beattie Terrace and Hawthorn Terrace see the map at http://maps.nls.uk/view/101099573#zoom=5&lat=4313&lon=5927&layers=BT
It is probably the row of houses between Hawthorn Terrace and the railway.

The 1976-77 OS plan shows Railway Terrace is the row of houses between Hawthorn Terrace and the railway. The North Eastern PH is on the north corner at the junction with Hawthorn Street. https://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html#/Map/409995/551638/13/101329 (you may have to zoom out)
