Scotlands People index lists an Agnes Humphreys who died in the District of Kirkholm in 1878 but she is listed as 43?

Hi Kay, Thanks for that tip..
On the Wigtownshire Free Press pages
HUMPHREYS, Agnes - D15/4/1878 - At Douloch, Kirkcolm, on the 15th inst., Agnes Humphreys, aged 43 years. Must be the same person

Kay, somehow I did not pick this up after having a play on SP but after trying again, I have snapped up her death cert.
It opened up a wee bit as her brother was the informant.. His name is Thomas Humphreys and sadly he died the same year death surprising not noted in his death cert but the wigtown free press makes reference to an accident.. He had married a Jane Aitken in 1870 and I am trying to see if they had any children.. As they were both abt 38 years old at time of marriage I am thinking time was not on there side for a child and so I am not picking anything up at this stage although a few places to try still.

Kay u opened up a wee door for me and thank you very much

Regards

Thomas Humphreys I believe is laid to rest in Stranraer
Birth:    abt 1833
Stranraer - Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland
Death:    Jul. 6, 1878 Stoneykirk
Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland

Died as a result of accident...
Name Thomas Humphrey
Birth 1833
Death 1878
Death Age 45
Burial Date 9 Jul 1878
Burial Place Stranraer, Wigtownshire, Scotland
Cemetery Sheuchan Cemetery
Grave Number 1238

I think Thomas was married to Elizabeth Shaw 1858 ? and I think they had a daughter named Martha Humphreys born on 18th April 1861 in Stranraer.. I think mother Elizabeth nee Shaw died in the same year?

I would be grateful if anybody has any information on Martha Humphreys.. and Elizabeth nee Shaw..

Thanks for any help
Regards

Hi Scott

I am guessing you have the 1861 census entry for Thomas and wife Elizabeth in Stranraer?:

Thomas Humphrey 27 Joiner (journeyman) b. Stranraer
Elizabeth Humphrey 26 b. Inch
Marrion Hughes 11 cousin b. Kirkcolm
Marrion E Shaw 4 niece b. England

The marriage is this one isn't it in 1858 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XY7G-G8X If you haven't viewed it already, the original image would let you confirm their parents' names etc.

The birth of Martha was just some days after the 1861 census (7 April) on 18 April https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQCT-H3J

I cannot see anything after Martha's birth for her :-\ Can't see a death on SP for her or an entry on the 1871 census either. However, I can't see Thomas and second wife Jane either in 1871 so far either on the transcript I am looking at...

Thanks to the help of this Forum and the Wig List Mystery solved.
A search of Scotlandspeople for births with the following options only gives 1 hit.
Surname: Humphreys, Options: Surname variants
Forename: leave blank
Year Range: 1855-1865
County: Wigtown
Next, change Surname variants to Exact surnames only
Enter forename Elizabeth Marth, and select Forenames that begin with
(Character limit doesn't allow the full given name Elizabeth Martha)
Select District: Stranraer
That 1 hit remains valid

Thus, Martha may have been recorded as Elizabeth or Martha, or both.
On FamilySearch she only shows up as Martha, which was possibly an oversight by the LDS volunteer who made that extract.
She died 02 AUG 1872, recorded simply as Elizabeth HUMPHREYS - Meningitis
She also appears as Elizabeth in the 1871 census with step-mother Jane AITKEN. I guess Thomas was elsewhere with his work on census night.
Her mother Elizabeth SHAW died 16 MAY 1861 Died - Complications from Childbirth

General ...
- Sadly for the family they were struck with tragedy with Thomas dying young from the accident in 1878 and sister Agnes Morland Humphrey also died in 1878
Both siblings dying before parents Sarah Morland and Humphrey Humphrey ... The fact that Thomas first wife died young and only noted child.. Elizabeth Martha Humphreys dying young ... A sad situation for Sarah Morland and husband Humphrey Humphrey to see both there children die before them and the only grandchild noted to also die....

Hi Scott

Really happy for you that you have made such progress. Good for you to have the answers as to what happened to young Martha. Always bothers when you don't.

As you say, sad up and downs for them  :-\
