Charleton family. Hamsterley
« on: Saturday 07 March 15 23:56 GMT (UK) »
Looking to find William Charleton b 1766 Hamsterley Northumberland. I am led to believe the Charletons all lived in the Hamsterley area. William mentioned above had a son William b. 1784 Hamsterley who married Mary Hutchinson of Washington, this is how the Charletons came to the Washington area.
I would like to try and find the birth and marriage of William b.1766 if possible.

Thank you for any help offered.

There are some other Charleton threads here (on which I think it was pointed out that Hamsterley is in County Durham  :)

Hi Jenb
Thank you for you interest and help in my Charletons. I know Hamsterley is in Northumberland and Washington was County Durham.
I was trying to find the Charletons form Hamsterley, My ggg grandfather was William Charleton b.1784 Hamsterley and he married Mary Hutchinson of Washington. So I think this could be the reason why the Charletons came to Washington. I would like to try and find the birth of William b.1784 at Hamsterley hopefully giving me his parents....
Please forgive me if I have confused you, I am not that good at this!
Regards
Stephanie

The challenge here is that nobody else can find the Northumberland Hamsterley that you are referring to. We only know the Hamsterley which is near Bishop Auckland in County Durham. Can you tell us why you think Hamsterley is in Northumberland?

familysearch has a baptism for William Charlton, 11 Apr 1784 at Hamsterley by Bishop Auckland, Durham. Father William Charlton. Mother Margaret.

I think it is fairly probable that this is the William you are looking for.

I've just gone through what I had and found a friend who got some info for me( she was an IGI member) gave me Hamsterley as being NBD. I am so sorry if I have caused confusion.

I know know it is indeed County Durham.

Thank you
