The marriage, 1905, places him in the middle of the Natal sugar cane region but no occupation on the transcript. Back to Transvaal by 1940, so it would appear that the detail from the 1911 (NAB - Natal?) Land Board document might hold the key.

His occupation on the marriage certificate is a carpenter.

Thank you Pampoen. I have just got back onto the computer after a couple of days away.
My heart leapt at what you had found until I saw the Millar as a second name. His baptismal record in Montrose Scotland, did not have a second name and Millar does not show up in any of his ancestor's names. The age is correct and it is worth keeping in mind.

 However - although I had already looked at familysearch I'll keep a watch on it more regularly as they are always adding new data.

I appreciate your time spent over all this.
