Davidson family Branxton
« on: Sunday 08 March 15 12:48 GMT (UK) »
My grX2 grandfather James Davidson lived at Branxton Farm with his wife Mary Kirkwood and two daughters, Mary born 1846 and Elizabeth born 1850. James died in 1851, his wife Mary remarried 9 months later to George Skeldon. They had a family and are listed on census records but I can find no trace of the girls Mary and Elizabeth, until Elizabeth married my great grandfather, John Tunnah, in 1878.
I'n very new to tracing my family tree so would appreciate any help I can get.

Thank you! I have the first information about them being born at Branxton Farm but I wondered where they went after their mother remarried. I've had a look at the 1861 census for the second piece of information and the date, place of birth fit.  But.... as far as I know Elizabeth's grandfather, James's father, was also James Davidson (wife Elspeth Sherriff). Was it common for a family to just 'adopt' another child from another member of the family? I will see if I can find the link between James Davidson and David Davidson.
Thanks for your help, really appreciate it. Also for the Maxwell link, I didn't know about that.

Thanks again.
It looks as if that's where Elizabeth went after her mother remarried. Wonder why. No sign of her sister Mary. That's a puzzle for another day!
Will no doubt be posting with another question soon! :)
