John Stavers - mid 1700s
« on: Sunday 08 March 15 16:46 GMT (UK) »
My 5th great grandfather John Stavers married Dorothy Charlton in 1780 at Woodhorn, Northumberland.

Children:
  • Anne Stavers bapt 12 May 1782, Woodhorn
  • John Stavers bapt 20 Jul 1783, Woodhorn. Murdered in Guam in 1824, buried Rotherhithe 1827
  • Peter Stavers bapt 2 Dec 1784 t Woodhorn. Died 1876 Blyth
  • Dorothy Stavers bapt 1786 at Woodhorn
  • George Stavers bapt 22 Jun 1788 at Woodhorn
  • Elizabeth Stavers bapt 20 Sep 1790 at Woodhorn. Died 1791.

Based on the marriage date, I am estimating John's birth to be before 1762 and am looking for his baptism. The Stavers were seafaring folks, so it is possible that he may not have been born in Northumberland. Perhaps not even English.

Hi

This marriage was by Licence, which says he was from the Parish of Earsdon, and was 26 years and upwards, so looking for a birth c1750

Thanks again Clair. I had not realised the value of looking for whether the marriage was by licence until you showed me this and the Hutchinson licence. I will now be taking a closer look at all of my brick walls from this viewpoint.

Hi,
I am also tracing John Stavers.
His daughter Anne b.1782 is my 3x gt grandmother. So that was Peter's sister.
Anne married Josiah Wheatley.
Their son Walker married 1) Jane Totherick then 2) Elizabeth Jane Stavers (Peter's and Sarah Elizabeth (Wilkinson's) daughter)

Yes I found this a possibility too.
Dorothy Charlton b.1758 Simonburn, dau. of Matthew Charlton
may be his wife. How can we be sure?
I also found John Stavers bur. 30/3/1831 Woodhorn, who lived with his son George at North Moor farm.

Thanks Trish. I have been leaning in the Simonburn Stavert direction too. Yesterday, I established contact with a person in the Netherlands who is also researching Stavers (through the London seafaring folks) and she has also ended up in Simonburn. Not quite convinced about the thoroughness of her research at the moment though.

I am going to take a closer look at this family you have suggested and see if a Simonburn/Woodhorn connection can be documented.

I was actually at Simonburn church briefly in my Easter hols on the track of my Henderson and Wemyss (Weams) lines, and have it scheduled for a more comprehensive visit if I can in the summer.
