School Lane, Bushey
« on: Sunday 08 March 15 20:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have 2 addresses in Bushey, that I am trying to pinpoint more thoroughly. I know where School Lane is, but the houses  I am trying to identify are:

6 Salem Cottages  (1918 - 1925)

68 Russell Place      (1911 census)

I expect that the names have changed over the years, but it would be good to identify them.

Many thanks in advance

jjq

hi,

What are the names of the people that lived at these addresses. My relatives also lived in School lane, so they probably knew one another. I have been involved in researching the men on the war memorial and there are bibliographies for them, so if you are looking for  a particular soldier you can go to our web site. busheyduringthegreatwar.org and contact Dianne who will be able to provide a copy. Some of the houses in School Lane have disappeared, my relatives is one of them.

Look forward to hearing from you, if you are new to this forum, welcome. You will find a lot of helpful people out there who come up with lots of help.

Regards,

Jackie.

hi its me again,

I have just noticed that you have the surname Quarry amongst your ancestors. Did any of them by any chance ever lived in Aldenham. The reason being there is a grave for Pythagorous Quarry in the Church yard. I also have a copy of the parish registers from 1560 to  1900, so I can check out any other Quarry`s if you need me too.

Regards,

Jackie.

Hi Jackie,

Not new to the forum, but have had family history of the back burner for a couple of years!!(As one does!)

The two addresses above relate to a Herbert Henry Stone (1885 - ?), although his mother also died at that address about 1928?
The second address was also a family home - James and Ann Stone, Herbert was also living with the time.

Half my Bushey relations lived in Merry Hill Lane!

I did have other relatives living in School Lane in the 1920's - 1950s? My great aunt - Edith Jemima Wells (Nee WELLS) - she married her first cousin - an occurance which has happened several time in that line of the family, which accounts for a  complicated family tree!.

I had looked at the website before, but not able to see any relations there.

My interest in my family tree was re-sparked by checking some old notes I had made, about Herbert and his World One One war service (apparently he was awarded the Military Cross.)  Also Edith's husband - Robert James WELLS - is said to have been awarded the Military Medal.

Any help is appreciated.

P.S. your other post just came through. My Quarrys are from Aldenham (and Elstree) 1750s - 1870s. Most of my research on that line was from certificates - in the pre-internet days - so some may have got missed.I had been told that Pythagoras has some kind of "memorial" at the church , but no image.  Anything you may come across would be great. He lived at the Brewers Almshouses.

hi again,

I lived in Aldenham for 23 years and regularly walked through the grave yard, Pythagorous Quarry and another  grave for Henry Humble were my favourite two graves. What a name too have.  Here are some information that I have found in the parish registers etc.

December 22nd 1802. Pythagoras Quarry bach and Sarah Green spin both of this parish. Banns. witnesses. William Huff and James Nicholls.

1786 Nov 26. Dec 3. 10. William Quarry bach of this parish and Punthany Chappin spinster of Idlestrey.(wonder if this is Elstree). These are the banns but there is no record of a marriage.

1788. Jan 10. Ann wife of Harry Quarry. (death).

1768. Nov 28. Henry Quarry bach and Anne King spin, both of this parish. Banns.  wits. John Kemp and Isa Nicholls.

1794. April 29th. Harry Quarry. Labourer.(death).

1797. Sept 20. James son of Harry Quarry.(death)

Hi
Thanks for your message . I have some of these entries, a couple are new to me. So will have to check the files tomorrow. I have always wondered at his parents naming him Pythagoras. There is only one other Pythagoras Quarry - and that is his grandson, who worked a  bank clerk in London. This P Q  had two daughters who went ion to sing with the touring companies of D'Oyly Carte (Gilbert and Sullivan operas).

All my Quarry line has died out.

But the Wells and Stones were quite prolific.........

Thanks so much.

Regards
jjq

PS William and Purthany ended up marrying in Elstree.

Hi

Taking a closer look at James, Sarah and Herbert's details in the last census . . . . .

. . . . . the address on the second page does not (quite) match the address on the first page.

The words "Russell Place" are missing from the 1st page ("cover").
That would leave ME to believe that Russell Place is the name of a (row of ?) houses, not a road.

Therefore 68 School Lane . . . . .

. . . . . has a plaque above the door with "Russell Place" on it.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Take a look for yourself.

Also take a look at who is living  #70.
